Prevent animated GIF avatars

Post by Headdy » Wed Feb 14, 2007 3:49 pm

Howdy people.

I've recently started my own phpBB forum. It doesn't use avatars yet, but once it does I would prefer to prevent people from using animated GIFs (90% of the time they're just plain annoying).

I've done my searching and haven't found anything that deals with animated GIFs in particular. I don't even know if it's possible to tell animated GIFs from plain ones! but, that's my request.

you can disallow uploading .gif filetypes

includes/usercp_avatar.php

find & remove:

Code: Select all

		case 'gif':
			return '.gif';
			break;

(if you want this :)

That's very heavy handed, but it's a good start! Thank you.

Yup. There is no easy way to programatically differentiate between an animated GIF and a regular one. Your other choice is to forbid them through your board's rules, and warn users who try to use them -- as this forum does.
