Family Tree

Post by MizeryDeAria »

I have a website dedicated to my family and have been searching for a solution to maintaining and managing a family tree by phpBB forum users depending on their usergroup. I haven't found any solutions, not even as a stand-alone solution.

I did come across an interesting solution by reading http://www.kencinnus.com/myfamily.html , but, after contacting the author he advised me that he was not releasing his solution to the public.

Wow. Is it really that rare for people to be interested in a family tree mod for family sites?

I've made one for http://www.clanmckeen.com/forum , for guild purpose on RPG games, but it's still under developpement (final state I hope). When I'll be satisfied of what I've got, I will submit it. It's rather an add than an mod, and can handle family tree in quite a simple way.

I'm using a phpbb forum for family research, http://netadams.com, but for creating family trees and archiving data, I'm using The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding at http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php. Future versions of the family sitebuilder will offer login features, but I don't know how one would link the two. Personally, I'm using phpbb simply as the forum. All researched data regarding the family will go into the sitebuilding database.

Any progress on that Ptirhiik? I am interested in installing such a mod in a future forum and am starting the research now...

As long as it is out there, that's ok.

Nevertheless, perhaps someone else would like to try it??? I think a family tree mod wouldn't be that hard to make, but what do I know?

I will start working on one as I am interested in this as well. have to do a little bit of research on it to see how to get it done.

Might take me awhile so if someone else wants to go for it and get it done before me by all means go right ahead.

Basicely you have a persons table, and a relationals table. As relations, I used only two kind : a daughter/son one (natural and adopted), and a "married to" one. Those two relations are enough to cover all the needs.

That's it? just children and maritial status?

I'm probably looking at quite a bit more.

Name
Surname
Former Name
Children
Maritial status
Date of Marriage
Date of Birth
Date of Death
Birth location
Death location
Main Occupation
Information Obtained from
Notes

If you can think of any more let me know.

I think he was refering to the associations (relations) between the tables (called joins, right?). Those things you mentioned would be a seperate, additional, table.

ah ok. that would make more sense then. I would probably do another for maiden name/surname.

Relationships

Post by MizeryDeAria »

I've compiled a list of all the relationships (columns in a database) needed to be able to link families together. Keep in mind there may be several for each relationship, so I'm not sure if several columns will be needed in the db.

Father, Mother, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Husband, Ex-Husband, Wife, Ex-Wife
