Stuborn Links

Post by rexx » Fri Jun 13, 2008 3:28 pm

Occasionally, at the bottom of unwanted posts, is a link I would like Word Censor to alert readers about, but Word Censor repeatedly fails; the link remains unaffected.

When I explore "edit", the link does not even appear at the bottom of the edit screen.

Am I missing something?

Could that link be a 'signature' that phpbb automatically attaches to the bottom of these posts?

If yes, then why doesn't word censor read them too?

Moreover, is there a fix for this?

Do you have a link to the post in question. Normally, the signature is subject to the word censor per this code in viewtopic.php

Code: Select all

	//
	// Replace naughty words
	//
	if (count($orig_word))
	{
		$post_subject = preg_replace($orig_word, $replacement_word, $post_subject);

		if ($user_sig != '')
		{
			$user_sig = str_replace('\"', '"', substr(@preg_replace('#(\>(((?>([^><]+|(?R)))*)\<))#se', "@preg_replace(\$orig_word, \$replacement_word, '\\0')", '>' . $user_sig . '<'), 1, -1));
		}

		$message = str_replace('\"', '"', substr(@preg_replace('#(\>(((?>([^><]+|(?R)))*)\<))#se', "@preg_replace(\$orig_word, \$replacement_word, '\\0')", '>' . $message . '<'), 1, -1));
	}
$user_sig = a posters signature

No.

I deleted the entired thing, during routine maintenance. But I shall attempt to preserve the post the next time I encounter this phenomenon.

The main reason why I was so quick to delete the post was because it contained links to hijacking software and I feared that the link I could not dismantle/render harmless was also bad.

Make a private forum on your board, only visible to administrators.
Then, just move nasty posts into that forum. This will make them invisible to all your members, but allow you to check it out at your leisure.

Following is the url, for another stubborn link:

Link Removed >>>Jim

When I went to "edit", the link appeared as:

"I already brooding alongside buying someaffection Removed as possibly dangerous>>>Jim]here[/url] what do you think? "

I don't care, if this link is harmless; my wordcensor has already identified other known bad links, in that post.

So, I instructed wordcensor to insert DONOTCLICKTHISLINK!!! in place of this link. Yet, the board would not.

I changed the name of this post to "DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK!!! (PROBLEM BEING RESOLVED - ADMIN)" in order to forewarn visitors.

I will delete this post, however, at about 3:00 p.m. (est - North America) in order to give phpbb time, for inspection. (Presently, the time is 2:01 p.m.)

I have removed your link as your site is absolutely "awash" with porn postings including some very graphic images.
I assume they are not meant to be there but in any case do not replace or post a link to your site whilst they are there.

If as I presume you are having problems with spam bots then see the sticky at the top of this forum as they are very easy to stop.

Sorry about the porn.

I did not know it was there.

I only mentioned the link to provide earlier requestors (above) with an instance of a link that word censor would not censor-out.

Incidently, I delete about 2 pages-worth of porn, from the site, every day. (It's very time-consuming and bothersome!)

Frankly, it's getting increasingly-hard to keep up with all the porn and most of it seems to be coming from robots.

I will check out your suggestion.

Thanks!

Do a search for "Britney" and you will find in excess of 4000 posts (sure that was the figure) and all of them are porn. That is searching on just one key word.

Jim

Edit
I was slightly out with that figure
Search found 5300 matches

Among other actions taken to curtail porn proliferation, a long time ago, I set up one forum, at the bottom of my message board, for legal porn, because there was so much coming in.

Since then, I have endeavoured to keep porn out of other places, at the site - but, as I have already alluded to, this has been becoming increasingly-hard.

Last week, I discovered posts, at other websites, which were encouraging people to post porn, in inappropriate locations, around my message board.

So, I suspected that this explained much of my problem.

On the other hand, I have had some successes.

Also, I have to keep in mind that newbies might post in the wrong forum, by pure accident or mistake.

So, no one course of action, for me, stands out.

As for my earlier post, here, I thought you were suggesting that the 'stubborn link' I provided, above, led to porn.

I was just responding to an earlier request to make an example of a 'stubborn link' available.

No - all the porn was on your site.
The other link I removed as links left by these animals often lead to sites where there are Trojans downloaded.

Since you appear to be having spam issues, it's worth noting that spambots can easily be stopped instantly with one of two MODs. The RAC MOD or the Security Question MOD will add a new field to the registration page which the bots cannot deal with. You can mass delete any spambot accounts you have by using the Starfox Admin Toolkit.

More information is in the sticky topic Preventing Spam - Humans and Bots at the top of the 2.0x Support Forum.

The Starfox Admin Toolkit can be download by clicking here.

Thanks for the info.

Incidently, apparently, I stand corrected; after reviewing earlier posts, it, now, seems that no one asked me to provide a sample of what I regarded as a "stubborn link".

Oops!
