www.spaceports.com is the best free host that you can find. They give you a basic html server with 20mb to start, and you can get more for free later. They also give you a mysql data base (if you request a cgi-bin account) and allocate you 10mb on the cgi-bin server, which you can not upgrade space on. Since the board does not use 10mb you should be fine. Again that URL is www.spaceports.com

Though a medium or large community will need much more space for the database. If you plan to ever have more than 10,000 posts be prepared to get paid hosting.

I have two phpBB forums up and running. The one I put on Spaceports.com and the other one is running on www.maxi-web.net
I don't really use the forum on Spaceports.com because it seems like their server is always slow.

But, anyways, http://www.maxi-web.net is working alot better for me. Of course the disk space is 10MB, but they already have the phpMyAdmin/MySql set up for you. You don't even have to upload the phpMyAdmin. Just upload the phpBB files and everything to the /public_html folder, do the necessary things and run the scripts.

Brinkster doesn't support PHP/MySQL. It's a free ASP/ASP.NET host.

For PHP/MySQL you may try: www.tripod.lycos.co.uk

You are also welcome to discuss free web hosts at www.freewebspace.net/forums

Ill host some people's PHPbb if theyd like.
Granted, its on my own server, not a profesional venture, but the server is a dual P3 800 with a gig of ram.
And honestly, thats a little overkill for some simple forums.

Just drop me a line, and I'll see what I can do for you.

Catch, no warez, porn, or otherwise 'immoral' forums, and I'll turn down anyone wishing to have one.

Drop me an e-mail, brentj@servuhome.net

That's a great offer!

Perhaps it'd be a good idea to add a "Hosting" section to phpbb.com where free hosts are listed.

Could be pretty usefull for people who just want to have a quick forum of their own, without having to go through gamers.com (ugly and very slow forums).
I know gaming clans always like to have forums, but I dont think most gaming clans can afford to pay a host (or old enough to), or really want to have a Geocities type host with banners everywhere.

There are loads of free hosts, but most are poor. Just looked at maxi-web, they say they run the servers in safe mode, but give the description for open_basedir! Which means phpBB's admin panel cannot be used with modification. If you buy unlimited access dial-up from www.f2s.com (UK only) you get PHP webspace. www.uklinux.net also give you good space if you dial-up an hour a month (again UK only)

I'll also host someones forum and give them complete admin control and with no banners, I have over 300 megs on my host just wasting away. Ya just gotta deal with my domain name....lol it's a clan name but beggars can't be choosy.....lol

Seriously though, if you want a free spot to park your forum you are welcome to do so on mine. I'm about to get another account and domain name so I'll even have more room.

IMO it's nuts to pay for that, if someone like myself is willing to fork over the cash....lol

note: I'm not forking cash over to you...........lololol
