I used www.nicewebs.com for a while.. They are technically a paid host but if you dive in a bit they offer a free version, as I remember it was 15mb with php/mysql and all that, no banners (except a tiny graphic link to them on your first page) and i couldn't believe how fast it was at the time. I don't use them any more cause i rent a server, but they were pretty good the last time i checked about 3 months ago :)

ive noticed that while using tripod on phpbb ive never seen 1 ad. i dont think it knows how 2 use ads when php pages r in use so what ive done is stash all my boards on 2 tripod and al html pages on brinkster(no ads there at all). i know this may stuff ya url up a bit but if you use a frame (and really you could make that frame so small no one would see it , like 1 pixel high) and if it all links 2 gether you honestly wouldnt know u left the original site 2 go 2 the forum. works as a charm 4 me.

digitalrice.com is another good one from what I can see - though I have my own hosting and heaps, it was the better of the ones I looked at

the idea of a thread or page for free php hosting is a rocking idea - can that be chased further?

On my server, I host 3 major forums, and what I have found that after a while, they GROW, and use Major Bandwidth, lol, Bandwidth isn't cheep. The bigger the forums / the bigger the data gets, the more popular you are the more it cost. Free went out Jan 01,2000, when all the big internet companys went bust. Lets face it banners don' get clicked, (ask yourself this "when was the last time I clicked a banner") Out of 20,000 page views I had 19 banner clicks and zero buyers, lol

If you are going to do something for fun, there are plenty of free servers out there. But face it, if you're going to be a pro, expect to pay. But if you shop around, there are a lot of good deals. Install PayPal and/or similar; if just a few active members will give a couple of bucks a month, it will more than cover the server cost.

you're almost right... except.... you can always use international providers!

these are providers from different countries that still work by an old system BANNER-AD-FRAME

there are few exceptions (host.sk, by.ru, agava.ru) with no or almost no banners
