Handling Spam Accounts

Post by NativeMind »

Hi,

I've recently noticed on my forum that every day or two I get this person who registered a name like: !!!aaa!!! or !!gay!!, does not post anything, and seems to only wish to have accounts with the website field as some (gay) porn site.

He registers using fromru.com (also known as mail15.com). I've added this to my banned list of e-mail addresses you can register with, but I'm sure that won't stop this person from using yahoo, msn, or others.

Is there any good way to stop this?

Thanks,
NativeMind

In the /contrib directory (versions 2.0.5+) is the visual confirmation tool. This helps greatly. :)

If this a person is manually creating accounts, that won't stop him. If it's a bot, then it would, since you have to manually type the verification numbers and letters in.

Also, after installation of phpBB, it tells you to delete the contrib directory.

You should still have the .zip file or the uncompressed directory on your computer.

What possible motive do these people have? A link in the memberlist to their site? I thought many spiders didn't index phpbb properly anyhow due to a session iD issue.
