Just a short question about the copyright-rules from phpBB. Is the following text allowed or do it have to change?

We prefer that you keep the original copyright intact.

Honestly, what exactly is copyrighted by you? Content should be copyrighted by the person who wrote it and the software is copyrighted by the phpBB Group.

If you make your own modifications with added functionality.

Even so, as the material noted by Graham states, the copyright has to remain unambiguous. A "merged" copyright is ambiguous in the sense that it's unclear who the original authors of software people are looking at are. In any event, distinct copyrights would seem to protect the interests of everyone.

Floriano, are you speaking about the content in your forum? If so, the content is generally given copyright protection to the author (your users). In the US, it's automatic, although labelling copyrights with a copyright notice and symbol help.

If it's a question regarding who wrote phpbb software, and how that work should be labeled, I think that question is pretty siimple: the phpbb authors wrote it, and you should give that credit to them.

Floriano: That text is allowed (legally) as phpBB is GPL'd code, but you may not recieve support here @phpBB.com unless you actually link to phpBB.

Sorry, now I'm back.

The question is not about my own Forum, it's about an Brazil-Forum,
where the technical admin is using this "copyright" and we had an discussion about this point.

Yes, he added some functions, but anyway, it is phpbb - and to our questions about this, the tech-ad never answered.

I'll send him the link to this threat - let's see, maybe he will read it....

Thanks
Florian

"Powered by phpBB" as a graphic image?

The appropriate phrase is "Powered by phpBB", correct?

As noted elsewhere (including a ZDnet item out today), this phrase is a target of google-based searches designed to identlfy potentially vulnerable sites.

Would displaying a graphic image having this phrase satisfy the license? That would thwart the google searches, and all skin developers should be encouraged to include an appropriate graphic and a simple means of selecing it over the text copyright.

As long as it says the same thing (and links to the same place), it doesn't bother us whether it is an image or text - some styles do this already.

Its the version number that the Google search turns up. Leave the copyright but remove the version number info.

What exactly is "The PHPBB group"? Can a non-legal entitiy legally hold copyright?

phpBB is a legal entity.
