Will phpBB Do What I Need To Do?

I'm very new to phpBB, but it looks like you guys are a knowledgable bunch, so maybe you can help me out.

I want to know if phpBB can be used to create the following setup:

I want to create an area on my site where visitors can come and view a forum-type page where threads are created and posted to by only a few people (2-6, probably). There would be no need for anyone other than those people to log in or, for that matter, even see any of the options that are normally found on a phpBB page. I would simply want the visitor to see the topics and be able to read through them with no option for interaction. I am using this to post class and teaching notes.

Is this a practical application of phpBB? If so, can anyone guide me in the proper direction to get set it up.

Absolutely, you can do this... with little or no modification depending on what you want...

What you would do is have your contributors register, remove the registration link (not all that necessary really), set your forums as viewable by anyone but lock them so no one can post... (except moderators which is what you'll want to make your contributors...)

Set the registration on your board to be by admin activation (this way you don't have to remove the registration link)... you can edit the language files to say that this board doesn't require registration (on the agreement page)...

Thanks, sounds do-able... My main thing is to make it clear in its layout that it is there specifically for viewing.

Anyone know of any examples of this type of board?

This section of the site is read only for everyone the few moderators that contribute to it. It is very workable for what you are describing.

You are looking at it.

Install phpBB, let the contributors register, give them permissions to post in a forum you set as "private not-hidden" and you are done.

It would be nice if you would remove the register link after setting it up after have your contributors register or you could just leave it and set the activation to admin-only so new registered users can't do anything.
