Gzip enabling - will it reduce bandwidth usage?

Post by jlhaslip »

I have a phpBB v 2.0.17 Forum set up at a hosting service which has a bandwidth limit. Will enabling Gzip compression reduce the bandwidth load on the server so that I use less bandwidth per month? And how would this be done? I am new to Forums and Hosting, so please help me out here. Thanks for the help...

Yes, turning on Gzip compression in your admin panel->General Admin->Configuration will help save bandwidth.
However if you're on a slow server it may make your site slower.

It depends. ;)
Gzip doesn't work with images -- it's just for the actual text and HTML code.
But you will see your bandwidth significantly decline most likely once you enable Gzip.
