allowing pics or attachments?

Post by yeti69 »

Is there any harm in allowing people to add pics or attachments?

On my site (model aircraft) I frequently ask them to do so as a picture is sometimes worth a thousand words.
If you are using the attachment mod you may need to think seriously about the physical and file size limits if the bandwidth is an issue. Also of course it goes without saying (but I will anyway :D ) to always be sure that whatever mod you install to provide that functionality is kept up to date.

I heard that people can attach a virus or a bug to a pic or attachment, is this true?
Hence I am concerned about allowing people to do this.

Well, just to give you a short example: Depending on what browser, operating system etc. you're using, even JPEG images could be a threat to your system. The problem starts when people link to a manipulated image (JPEG was just an example here since there were some vulnerabilities in various versions of some Windows core libraries a couple of years ago) and you follow this link using a vulnerable software.

So, sure, attachments can be used to distribute malware, but at the end of the day, they are by far not the easiest way for people attack your system. It is your responsibility to keep your system safe from things like that by always installing the latest security fixes for whatever software you're using as well as having some other security utilities (anti virus, malware scanner, firewall etc.) around if your operating system is likely to attract such attacks :-)

Thanks! How do you go about changing the forum so people can add pics or attachments?

If you want to allow them to be uploaded into the actual posts you are going to have to install something such as the attachment mod to the forum, this allows file uploading into posts including pictures.

Is this something that a person without much computer experience do by myself?
Can some please direct me how to do it or should I get my programmer to do it? I'm trying to do it myself so I can save some $$$.

For attachments read this thread: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=74505

I think that this script was easyMOD compatible, search for easyMOD and there will be directions.

I will say this about allowing attachments and the img tag. I run a website that is very family oriented, and has many children. Spammers have somehow found our board, and posted not only links to porn sites, but images of rather hardcore porn. I am glad that I removed the img tag and only allowed the Admins to attach files. While we try to delete these posts as soon as possible, it is impossible to have someone on the board 24/7. Some kids did see the post, but at least there was no images present.

Hi...just wondering. Do you allow anyone to put up pics or only the admin?
Thanks!

A quick question about this MOD that I hope can be answered here, rather than on the 1,362 pages of the MOD itself. Does this MOD also allow for limiting the size of image links in messages? Is it possible to even limit the size of linked images?

Please do not break the board rules, especially when you are obviously aware mod support needs to be sought from the mods download topic, thanks.

Yes I allow all my users to post images. The very nature of my site makes that ability very useful. I have never had that facility abused in all the time the site has been running. (about 3 years)
I try to encourage the use of this rather than the linking to offsite images.
In fact I have had two instances were a topic has all but crashed by users posting large linked images that were so very slow to open and in one instance were 8 to a page at about 1700 pixels wide and near 1Mb file size. The attachment mod will allow you to control the size of images used.
