Ban Bug

Post by rexx » Thu Jun 05, 2008 2:01 pm

Occasionally, I thought I running into users, whom I had already banned.

Today, I confirmed that a username, I had banned days ago, was the author of another post, at my message board.

I had banned both the username and IP.

The person has attained a new IP.

Yet, as I said, the username was used, again.

This individual seemed to be holding out an olive branch and so long as he/she behaves, then I have no problem with him/her posting new messages.

But, there does appear to be a bug, in the ban control.

Any thoughts on this?

Set up a test user and try and re-create this.
If you're not on the latest version of phpBB, you should also try updating and testing again.
If you find it to be the same result, then report it to the bug tracker.
I have not heard of any such bug myself - not to say one doesn't exist though ;)

Maybe the user has just inserted a space in front of the old username.
There are certain characters that can be inserted that would not show (no we can't say which)

I don't believe that works. The username validation function runs the trim() function.

True, but you can insert "invisible" characters in a number of ways. You can also specify visible characters in ways that are physically different, as far as the database is concerned, but will display identically. I'll refrain from discussing them here, for the same reasons Jim is, but they have to do with how HTML encodes characters.

If as I suspect it is not the same username but a "modified" one then you could at least select and delete or Nuke it with the Starfoxtj Admin Toolkit
