stretching a centered template (with blank L/R sidebars)?

Post by JustinBr » Fri Sep 01, 2006 11:24 pm

I want to take a centered template with blank left and right sidebars and strech it horizontally to fit the page.

Is there some sort of code or line that can be changed/added to take a centered template and have it span the page?

How easy is this?

Very easy, depending on which theme you're using. If you can provide that information, I'd be happy to show you what to change! :)

Open overall_header.tpl and find the following line:

Code: Select all

<table width="780" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="10" border="0" align="center">
Replace "780" with the width you want. :)

Specify a percentage (like 100%) instead of 780 in the width and it should expand/stretch. I believe the very first table tag in overall_header should do the trick, unless the original author did not organize the HTML structure correctly.

Some template authors design their templates to be what is referred to as 'fixed-width' which isnt them not doing things properly, it is them using their artistic talent to make the theme look as they want it.
Some templates dont use the same structure as subSilver, which again isnt bad coding, they may not use the same tables and borders subSilver does!
It is hardly fair to pronounce them bad coders for that!!!

Hey, it's a lesson learned. HTML should be kept as simple as they can without hurting a web designer's mind.

In defence of SAK`(!), I understood him to mean that it's poorly coded if the author has made it so that you have to change the width in multiple places, in which case I agree.

...and simply because I once been down that kind of road. Trust me, it's no fun to do poor coding or structuring. Thanx, Thatbitextra, I-O-U one. :wink:
