Just a question (and maybe to make the mod a bit better possibly?)

Code: Select all

if ((!$user->data['session_admin']) && (($user->data['user_type']==USER_IGNORE) || ($user->data['user_id']==ANONYMOUS))){
What happens if say, a friend of yours joins the forum. A person you trust and you make them a moderator, eg. Then they too would not be able to post links until days of registration/number of posts are both reached, yes?

Just wondering and good luck with your mod. :)

Once promoted to moderator, they would simply have to wait until they have enough days membership to post links. This shouldn't be a problem as typically, it isn't along time.

Edit to add:
Just seen your mod:

Nice work!
I had been searching for a mod like this, and hadn't found yours, I think it was the American spelling "authorized" that was throwing me? I did need to stop guests posting though, so went down this very similar route.
Go on ! it's not as steep as it looks.....

Still working great here! Better than any captcha ever invented. ;)

Though, lately I get some spammers stupid enough to leave the posts sans links.

I had the same for a while, but they never came back after their first post submitted successfully.

I wonder why.............. ;)

Thanks to whoever bumped this up! Now if I install this mod now, will it affect the people that already registered. Let's say I set it up for 30 days & at least 20 posts, will it affect members that registered already but fall in this criteria? also I have New Members Group set-up will that be a problem?

30 days and 20posts ! wow, you're hard to please ;)

Yes it would.
If a member of your forum has been a member for 30 days, and only made 19 posts, this mod will stop them posting links or domain references.
You don't have to set the bar so high in my (and I think John T.Folden's?) experience.
I have mine set a lot lower, and have no problems.

Edit to add:
Yes, it will affect your new users group, but only if they try to post a link

Yeah, funny that... ;)

Mine seems to come in spurts, and from different countries... it will be quiet for several weeks and then China spammers will try... then quiet... and then India will have a go and give up. This last week it has been Amsterdam.

So it's one or the other. Basically the # of posts or days registered? I don't have to set both?

Indeed, mine is set extremely low...
Min post count before posting links: 1
Min days from registration before posting links: 0

:D Can't get much lower than that.

My forum sees an average of 14,000 unique visitors a month and it has worked out well. The key is to deter spammers WITHOUT inconveniencing legitimate posters.

Most spammers who do sign up will give up after the first post if they can't insert links, in my experience. I might get one or so a month that will make several posts before turning feral but it's not worth it to lengthen the above settings as I want this 'restriction' to be invisible to regular users (who generally don't need to leave links with their very first post).

By default, it is zero, and zero, so changes nothing. Set them at whatever you want, and experiment from there.
John's post sums it up perfectly though.
