This mod's goal is to make it as simple and efficient as possible.

Added this to our board today as we were getting upwards of 10 spam registrations a day.

This along with the security question MOD should hopefully kill most off.

Ok, i am in the process of upgrading from phpBB2 to phpBB3, and just trying to make sure i dont get any spam on the new board befor ei make the switch.

i found this mod yesterday, and tested it on phpbb2 (old version)

it looks great on the board, works flawlessly so far., but when someoner chooses the -12 time zone they receive this message on phpbb2

Image

however on phpBB3 it just shows plain text on a white background. I know you want to make this as simple and efefctive as possable, but how would I go about making it match teh forums layout? using the templates and such?

This could be achieved by using this instead of die():

Code: Select all

trigger_error('the error message', E_USER_WARNING);

I think there are some Bots out there that figured this out. I've been getting bots with timezones of UTC +8

If they really are spambots, enable CAPTCHA and no one should register. phpBB3 hasn't been beaten in this direction yet.

If they are human spammers, there isn't much you can do than delete their accounts patiently.

Well, This worked great until a few weeks ago and all of a sudden I had about 3-5 new users a day that were not activated accounts but still a pain to always have to delete them. I did notice that they are no longer choosing the -12 time zone and were bypassing the captcha somehow and they all are using the -3:30 time zone (Does a real person even use this? Never know there was half hour time zones. lol) so I modified the code to what I now have below and so far 2 days with zero bot sign ups.

Code: Select all

    if ($data['tz'] == -12 || $data['tz'] == -3.5)
    {
      die("Please do not select that timezone as this is used by spambots. However, if you do live in this timezone, please select it after you register from your UCP. Thanks.");
    }
;)

Thanks.

I read 'how to install mods', but got to a point where the instructions are really 'wanting'.

The mod (Anti Bot Question) has an SQL paragraph prior to the Edits. I can't figure out how to deal with that information. I tried using phpMyAdmin and found a couple databases, but from there I'm lost.

Any help?

My MOD has no SQL queries at all. All you need to edit is one file (includes/ucp/ucp_register.php) and re-upload it. If you're referring to another MOD, you had better ask there.
