Create permission for non-moderator users to delete own topics

Post by Ideas Bot » Tue Nov 14, 2017 5:20 pm

Currently, there is a permission that allows users to delete their own posts.

Create a new permission that allows users to delete their own topics. Allow the permission to be set in two different ways:

--When the topic is deleted, also delete all replies
--When the topic is deleted, delete only the original post but keep the replies

Bad idea in my opinion. A user deleting their stuff should have zero affect on any other users stuff.

Why not allow administrators of forums make that decision rather than making it for them?

Because with this idea, the admin is not the one who would decide, and that's precisely the problem.

As we are talking here about possible improvements to phpBB's core I definitly wouldn not like to see such an option in the standard permission system.
No matter which of the two alternative options you proposed were to be realized and then possibly choosen by someone, the overall effect would be negative: either crippling the contend flow of a topic, rendering it meaningless at best, or de-motivating all those who elese participated in it, by showing them a degree of disrespect for their efforts, thoughts and engagement they invested that may well be considered annoying.

Not quite correct: why should an administrator allow users to censor not only their own posts but the posts of other users as well, without any means of control against misuse - something that will be the result of such an optiony, directly or indirectly.
Deleting posts or whole topics should be up to admins or mods alone - if good reason exists.

Something like this here should, imho, meterialize as an extension but not be part of the core, if at all.

Well, I think that if the INITIAL post of a topic is deleted, the whole idea of that post mostly is gone.

We see too many forums where a user gets annoyed about something and edits all their posts to one character. Even well meaning people who think their issue has been solved do it on here, ignoring the fact that the topic then serves as a resource to someone else with the same problem. This would be a whole other level of mess if they could delete their topics too.

Huh? If such a permission was available the admin sets the permission and that's their decision. With no way to set the permission it's phpBB's decision. Understand?

While such setting would not be something you would use often on most boards it could be useful. For example many forums may have a classified section.

That's why this should be realized as extension and not as part of the core. Understand?

There is a plethora of settings in the ACP that are only going to be useful for some sites. Understand?
