Update Standard Profile Fields

Post by Volksdevil »

I think the standard profile fields need some modernisation?

Currently we have:
ICQ
AIM
yim
JABBER
MSNM

How's about the addition of the obvious ones at least? and the ability to turn the above and any additional suggested below on and off?
Youtube
Facebook
Twitter
Google+

There's a really nice mod by Vinny here > viewtopic.php?t=2158812 which adds them in a nice looking way.

Image. Look to the right, looks really good. https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/download/id_83702

Also, I'm not sure about others but I don't think I've had many members over the years fill out the current standard ones, so would it be possible to have an option/switch for each original profile field? As far as:
Visible on viewtopic YES / NO
Visible on profile YES / NO
Etc, etc...

I know the custom profile field option sort of gives this, but I mean for the core options, plus any possible new ones as suggested (Youtube, facebook, twitter...)

For me it is better to have Skype as default field.

Volksdevil wasn't proposing a definitive list, just listing a few examples.
macr.ae = my website. you probably won't like it.

The difficulty is that any list is changeable every few months when the next big thing comes out. The likes of twitter, pinterest etc didn't exist when 3x was nearing the end of development. Likewise you could argue not many use ICQ and AIM any more as they've moved on to skype et al.

You'd just need an easily editable list of field names and the ability to add more (with icons).

Aye, point taken. But I just think that the current options are past their sell by date now, they have been there a long time and I think it's time for an update.

Rather than shipping with ICQ/AIM ETC, I'd love to see the obvious ones instead.

Yep. Exactly my view...When I first started a PHPBB board around 8 years ago, I viewed the current core profile fields (Especially ICQ/AIM) as a little bit 'Meh' even back then and I just wanted to get rid of them really. These days they really do seem a little old fashioned. :!:

I just think if the board was released with more 'Current' social fields it would look much better from the off.
It would be especially good if the profile fields that it did come with as standard were optional via a simple switch setup.

The idea of the editable list could be a good start...Maybe a field with a name, and an upload image/icon for each field? But that's a slightly different topic in a way as I just dislike the current standard profile fields.

Of course as said, It was just a few listed to show the idea. I think we all know the obvious ones anyway. But if some were selected to replace or run alongside the current ones, it would without doubt be better whichever ones were selected.

I'd much rather see:
Any! Current social option (Take your pick)
Any! Current social option (Take your pick)
Any! Current social option (Take your pick)

Rather than:
ICQ
AIM
Jabber
Etc

See this topic. Once this is implemented (if it ever is), adding/removing profile fields will be easier - including the ones in the list in the first post. I'm not sure how images for these fields would work, but I'm sure a talented developer/contributor could figure it out.

Sounds promising that Tabitha. 8-)

Hopefully we can do away with the old, and bring in the new. Or at least improve things the way that topic suggests.

I'm upvoting for Tabitha's suggestion of converting current non-essential fields to CPF's. That would make this issue less of an issue. Of course, we should probably define a few of the most common to be there by default, but then the admin would be free to change it as he or she wishes.
Don't forget to smile today. :)

Agree, all profile fields should be converted to CPF.

+1

Only the pofile fields needed for user registration should be hard-coded.
