At least a moderation-function like "merge two or more posts", would be enough for the beginning. :)

+1 for automation of this task for posts in the same topic, doing something similar to facebook private chat or skype chat etc that merge consecutives posts/chat messages done by the same users if done not later than a certain time lapse. I don't know which exactly is the time lapse but may be till an hour if there isn't any other post by other users.

Don't like it. It's much easier to split topics if there are more posts.

Sorry D@ve if I didn't misinterpreted something, this idea is for merging / joining posts not for splitting them...

Yes, you are korrekt...

The idea is to merge...

...this:
POST 1 in Topic 1 wrote:foo
POST 2 in Topic 1 wrote:bar
...into this:
MERGED POST in Topic 1 wrote:foo
bar

but I don't want that. If you want to split the dicussion becaue POST 2 is offtopic its much more complicated with this auto merge thing.

PS: Would be much better to have an option in the permissions to prevent posting two times in a row...

a) easier to implement
b) no problems with character limit
c) much "cleaner" solution

I'd prefer double posts over being forced to merge them...

This really is not the problem because a single post could be natively half in topic and half off topic. And it is exactly the same problem as well as if it was auto merged by the system.

But the following is a great idea +1 for that, I like it very much:

.

If a user has just posted, is prevented to post another time. If he wants to add other things he must modify the post he just posted. Very good I agree with.

I posted the new one here:
Prevent posting two times in a row

What's wrong with posting two times in a row, especially on boards that don't allow editing?

This

I allow double posting on my board in. Not everywhere, but it is not a strictly enforced rule. In forums (or maybe topics) where it might not be allowed, if someone double posts, a moderator could just merge them, unless the user is a staff member. I don't think it should be automatically merged. There should be a quick mod tool to merge posts (just like you can merge topics).

I don't even care if it's 10 times in a row as long as the posts or topics are relevant and useful. Maybe not 10 in 5 minutes but that's what flood settings are for. 10 in a row, in 10 days, how/why would that be a problem? It doesn't prevent others from posting.

How did that even become a common rule? :?

I'm not sure to understand exactly what you mean, sorry for this. But I'll try to respond how I have understood starting from your words "10 times":

I don't like situations like the following in my board:
WhyMergingPosts0.png
WhyMergingPosts0.png (25.45 KiB) Viewed 75 times
I absolutely prefer situations like the following:
WhyMergingPosts1.png
WhyMergingPosts1.png (3.55 KiB) Viewed 75 times
[Of course in the images I used standard repetitive text, just for the example]

As well as everyone can see every situation represents 10 posts: the second situation where posts are merged is much more readable and pretty easy to handle. Nevertheless the second one is a better and more elegant and professional solution imho.
So imho if the option to activate the merge post feature is present into the ACP every admin can use or not as needed. If it is not present nobody can use even if needed...

Because the topic are related I gave the same response here too:

Re: Automatically merge double posts

I know you don't understand.

Merging multiple posts, just because they're in a row, is not a good idea. There may be cases where merging is appropriate but there are also cases where it is not. That's why it shouldn't be automatic and that's why it should be an extension instead. I *would* support a moderator option, in the core, to manually merge posts but not an automatic one.

I posted a recipe example in the *other* double post thread.
