Alert when leaving page with form filled with text

Post by Kamahl19 » Sun Jul 14, 2013 3:33 pm

This is what drives me really crazy.. For example today, I was writing one really long and I guess good idea.. However I accidentally clicked on some link, it redirected me and all my text was lost. This happens at least once a week when I am on my laptop without mouse.

Facebook solved this very well. When there is an input field with text and you click on another link, it displays simple alert with question, if you really want to leave page because there is some unsent text.

The implementation is very very simple, it is just few lines of javascript.

What browser are you using? I can recommend a plugin that does this for you - both the browsers I use have it built in, and it is a useful feature.

It is definitely a browser feature, not a website feature, though.

I think it's vbulletin, that actually saves what you type as a draft? Maybe another way to look at it? (Slightly different to topic here I know)

I implemented a mod on my forum that does the same. As you type, a little div pops up saying 'Saving your post'

I've seen such feature on several forum, its very annoying.

I often start typing and then change my mind and it tries to stop me from navigating away from that page. That has happened way more times than number of times I clicked something accidentally and lost post text.

I've lost many posts in many phpBB forums, since I clicked on "Submit" and close the window instantly, when the site was loaded...
But if other people have submitted answers during typing, the post won't be submitted but the post form ist reloaded...

I also find that annoying, but loosing a post that was 30 Minutes work, is much more annoying...

And yes, there is the back-button of the browser. But it won't help if you first recognize it two hours later...

It will be a better thing if this feature will be implemented by default in ALL browser, as well as text editor and others softwares already have.
But because this isn't so yet, I think that it isn't very useful this addon for mozilla only because not all people have mozilla.

Waiting that all browsers will implement it I hope that phpbb will implement it into the cms.

There are plugins available for other browsers. Some even have it built in as default.

It is a good thing.
The problem is for other browsers that haven't built in.
Hope in the future will be present everywhere as default function: it is very useful and saves lots of situations.
