Expiration date for shadow topics.

Post by Crizzo »

In the current phpBB3.0.11 you can move topics from one forum to an other forum. And you can activate a "shadow topic", which will stay in the old forum to show the users where the topic moved. Afaik this topics will not be deleted, if a moderator doesn't manually deletes them.

As a moderator a additional function would be nice, to setup a expiration date for this shadow topics. A simple:
"shadow will be deleted after: 1, 2, ... hours/days/month" would be enough.

Of course the old version to keep the shadow forever should be kept, too.

Afaik this topics will not be deleted?

but it's not a topic, it's a reroute, it's not actually taking up any further memory in the database

I don't think you understand how shadow topics work but that wouldn't stop them having an expiry date if you want them to

You seem to think that "shadow topics" are a drain on a board's resources somehow but they are the same as a LINK to where the new topic "is" that's all ;)

I know how it works.

But after some time, they are just annoying in viewforum.php and noone will need them anymore. So i think, you could automatically delete them with a timer. :)

After some time the shadows will drop off the front page of viewforum, since they are not bumped when someone replies to the topic.

Of course, but they need the same place as a normal topic.

Why should you keep them forever? At some point, everybody who cares about that topic, will have noticed that it was moved, i think. :)

And deleting them automatically is much easier than manually. :D

What´s going on by a shadow-topic without set on default to move?

For this function there is (old) modification, and it can be useful as a standard feature.

I think this is a great idea and is sorely needed. Although the shadow topic is dropped down off the first page and buried, it's still there which doesn't give an ideal user experience. It's not about the drain of resources, but how your forum is shown to users.

I think this is a good idea - I have the mod installed ad I use it. It really unclutters the forums without a mod having to go in to delete the shadow topic. As a beginner, I also once made a mistake and deleted the real topic while trying to get rid of the shadow topic.

IMHO it is a "must have" for next phpbb releases... but at the condition of course that it is possible to use the actual mode too... so in the future it will be possible to insert a timer for expiration date or not: to set an expiration date for shadow topics have to be facultative.
Please explicate why you voted negative or positive, so it will be possible to better understand each one's point of view.

I'm thinking a setting in Pruning/Auto Pruning may work well for this...
