Post Count Update

Post by Jessica » Tue Jul 16, 2013 6:31 pm

When you make x posts in a forum, and your post count is x, it doesn't go to zero when you set the forum to not count post counts. Fix the issue with post count not updating when a forum is changed to increase or not increase post count.

Also add ability to edit post count in ACP

Counting Posts is not a setting. It is a permission.
Depending a user's groups forum permissions, you might be counting posts from one user, and not from another.

Each post has its own post_postcount which is set when the post is made. Under the current system, if a permission is changed, you would have to sum-up that user's permissions, to see if the result is still "No", and then go through all of the user's posts in that forum and set the post_postcount flag. Then add up all of the posts and reset the user's total postcount. That would be quite a big chunk of queries resulting from a little permission flag change...

I don't think so.
The post number only goes up. In order to make it update again, one needs to manually order a recount. There's an option in the ACP to do just that.

The option in the ACP would not work, for the reasons I gave... The posts_postcount flag would have to be reset on that user's posts first.

It is made that way because it reduces a whole lot the load that it places on the DB when a post is made, deleted or when post count rules change.
The actual difference is quite noticeable specially with a system that is under a heavy load.

Yes. You stated that the button in the ACP would fix the postcount in this case, and it will not because the posts_postcount flags have not been updated.
