Attachments in subfolders

Post by wile »

Hello everyone,

what about attachments in subfolders ?

Some hosting providers have problem with bigger boards that have quite a lot of attachments because all of these attachments are in one folder only.
What makes difficulties for backuping or copying attachments via FTP.

Recently I could see few topics where users were creating mods for rearranging attachments into more subfolders to solve this issue.

Anyway MODing does not seem to be correct solution as it may cause compatibility issues in future, when new phpBB release etc.
So I think there should be created one general solution for phpBB that will handle this issue.

Hello,
another point:
Just seperate all user file data - means all uploads done by users - from application files.

I think it's very important for backing up and restoring. Very often the file data - completely or partially - is lost while server movement and so on.

one possible way - optimum:
./data
./app
index.php
.htaccess

Maybe a subfolder name with the date (formated like yyyymmdd or just yyyymm) in witch the attachment was uploaded by user

Any way we have to consider that phpbb already has an option to prune messages older than a certain time.
So I'm not completely sure if this new subdivision method will be better useful to delete old post or discussions.

Hello peopleopinion,
this feature is not about posts. This feature is about attachments, Images, and so on.

BTW: I'm not sure. But I think if a post is been deleted in phpBB then the attachment of the post is not deleted, too. I'm not sure. I never tested it by now.
But, this would be another feature request (phpBB idea).

I've reevaluated the question and voted +1. I did it because of the following:
Some hosting providers have problem with bigger boards that have quite a lot of attachments because all of these attachments are in one folder only.
What makes difficulties for backuping or copying attachments via FTP.
But nevertheless I'm not completely sure that this implementation could solve the problem: if the board is very big might be that is not enough to simply subdivide attachments by years.
If a host has such limitation, today is not a good host or the hosting service is not properly configured: this makes that host not adapt to host big board in its servers. So mightbe it will be more useful to definitely change host and transfer the forum elsewhere.

People with bigger boards may have to find better hosts too...

Good idea.
Folder structure as /files/year/month/filename is good for big forums.
