List of all known mod with description in APC dedicated page

Post by peopleopinion » Mon Nov 11, 2013 1:11 am

What about to add a page in the ACP where to find a list of known MODifications that is possible to instal/uninstal with one click starting directly form that page?

The list can be something that automatically updates caching data directly from mother phpbb website -> from a list of Approved or Verified MODs ready to import and instal in own space.

What I mean is, for example, something that can look like similar at the installation/uninstallation page of styles with the difference that styles are in local server but mods are stored in phpbb.com server and are update dinamically from there in that list. So that list inherit/catch in real time update done into phpbb.com.

The page might be organized by categories and can have for example some data like the following fields disposed in a dedicated table or something, with for example the following fields:

Name of the mod
Authors
Version
Description
Compatible phpBB Version(s)
Known issues
Space needed
Screenshots/Preview
Actions -> (Import/Install/Uninstall/Delete)
[Other data?]

As you can see the list of the fields is very similar at the list used in each mod page.

After installation the mod record migrates to the Installed section of the same page (with the same philosophy of the style installation). From here will be possible to access the pages of the mod where it can be configured or optimized on the basis of the administrator tastes and needs, or updated when a new version is released. At this regard, a dedicate field can be created in the section of installed mods that shows, when needed, at the side of the interested mod the note "New stable version available. Click here to update".

IMHO if implemented in the phpbb core a thing like that will be a huge step ahead in phpbb evolution, that will make mod management very easy and complete user friendly, solving a bunch of problems in one move for both the user/administrator of the web site, phpbb community etc.

-1 for me...

WordPress will allow admins to SEARCH for available plugins (what they call MODs) but a detailed list of over a thousand possible MODs, in the ACP, wouldn't be a good idea. The new Extension system could include such a search feature but converting all of the old MODs would probably be too complicated and not worth the effort since most MODs probably won't work with 3.1 in the future anyway.

Oh... you are right. Agreed.

Of course I have to correct the wording of the idea from:

"List of all known mod ..."
in
"List of compatible mod with the installed phpbb version ..."

But having a list of MODs imho can be a good starting point to search new features to add on to the own web site/forum. Lot of people (me first ;) ) that would like to add a new feature doesn't know how to search for or that. Having a list can help a lot. And sometimes it gives new ideas too for new features that can improve users experiences.

Of course it needs to rethink the MOD manager framework. But it will be an effort that is worth making: it will be a little-big revolution.

You could end up with a huge list of stuff you're not bothered about.

It's up to the board owner to come to this site (or others) and find the MODs they need, not for the admin panel to tell them a big list of what's available.

Having a list directly in the board simplify things. Also gives more tranquillity to admins that would install something new and that something is in someway "certified as working" with his/her board version and its "security" is at the same level of the existing board; having such feature and a "click and install" feature in that list, with other enhancements, might improve usability and corresponding appreciation of the big and not "expert" public on phpbb board.

There is no "certified as working" for MODs; sometimes they don't work, sometimes they're not updated or don't work with other MODs and there would be too many combinations to test reliably.

In fact I said

Having to come here to look for a MOD means they get a much bigger view of the information about it. You can see the version it was tested on, how much support it gets from the author, how many people have posted about issues with it, what common issues you can look out for before you even start, whether there is a FAQ about it and a lot more besides.

Good observation: it can be solved by having in the list into the board a link that opens the page with all these infos.

That's just more unnecessary clutter IMO when they can just come here instead.

Maybe some admin doesn't know that phpbb.com exists or dosen't know how it works, or can't give his trust without somekind of "Trusted mod inside" mark... No all admins are good programmers to understand what they are installing in their site/foum.

They should have come here to get the software in the first place and the name and links are all over it. If they're using a host installed version it's up to the host to look after it.
peopleopinion wrote:or dosen't know how it works, or can't give his trust without somekind of "Trusted mod inside" mark
They don't have to know how it works but we are surely the best source of information on that. The most trusted place you could get a MOD is this site.
peopleopinion wrote:No all admins are good programmers to understand what they are installing in their site/foum.
Indeed. In fact you don't have to know any programming at all, even to install MODs as they are. You just copy paste in to the right places. I don't know the first thing about php coding. The new MOD system will be even easier. Upload a folder and that's it.

Absolutely, you are: no doubts on it. In fact the big problem is not that. As you know every one can link everything outside there. And this is capable of creating security issues IMHO. But a list of trusted mod solve any doubts. But it is just my opinion.
And anyway if an admin needs more infos about a mod can come here at the related page and read everything on that.
