Rename "foes" to "ignored Users

Post by D@ve » Sun Nov 17, 2013 10:37 am

Just a tiny little issue:
I don't know exactly how it is in the English... But in German "foe" is kind of a harsh word (and imo its not that different in English)...

If I want to ignore a user he is annoying, maybe a pain in the butt... But not necessarily a "foe"...

I'd rather name it "blocked users" or "ignore list" actually you could divide it from the friends function at all. You have friends and you have an ignore list, that are not in context to each other.

regards, Dave

In English it's just semantics. Ignored users might be more accurate but "friends and foes" work together in alliteration so maybe that's why they picked it.

Whatever.
You can edit your language files to use whatever words you like.

It's a small idea but I think it's sensible.

I don't think people really engage with Friends & Foes on phpBB forums. I agree that 'foe'ing someone feels harsh, and therefore is a last resort. But if it's simply ignore... then it's neutral and less dramatic, and is more a 'convenience' feature than carrying a feeling that you're punishing someone.

Perhaps it should be 'Follow' & 'Ignore'.

'Follow' would be a better term than 'Friend' because friendship is a two-way connection, and this is a one-way feature. 'Foe' suffers from the same semantic problem. 'Foe' is usually felt mutually; Whilst 'Ignore' is a one way action.

If the language and the '1 way' nature of this feature is correctly reflected, it then is possible to imagine new functionality (for a new Idea), e.g. 'Follow' means you'll get notifications when they post, or a list of all your followees' posts, perhaps.

(Don't know if D@ve would support this change as well?)

I'm against turning phpBB into a social media clone by using "follow." I don't think it needs to be changed.

Is 'friending' not also a term used in social media, cylinder?

phpBB friending is not true friending because it's a one-way action. Whereas friendship is a two-way thing. This makes the feature confusing.

The other thing about using terminology people are familiar with, is that, well, they are already familiar with it. So they don't have learn anything. Which is a principle of good web design.

Besides which, phpBB 3.1 has a 'notifications' system which looks a lot like Facebook; so it is already taking cues from other social platforms where those features are seen as successful.

I asked if it was used 'in' social media Cylinder, not exclusively by it.

Whichever, semantically it is a two-way connection and phpBB doesn't actually offer that; this makes it confusing to the user. I genuinely never understood the feature as a user and needed to look it up as an admin to find out what it did.

It's poorly named. Personally I'm not 'religiously' against any social media naming convention or feature, as long as it makes sense to the user. With billions of people using social media everyday, they understand 'follow' perfectly well as a one-way action they can take on an another user they have an interest in.

I'll still pass but, as Brf said, "You can edit your language files to use whatever words you like." :D

One problem with the foe list is that many "ignorers" will click the "Display this post" link anyway; some kids just pretend to ignore users. ;) The name, however, isn't a problem.
