Site counter for visits

Post by peopleopinion » Wed Nov 20, 2013 6:59 am

What about to add a simple php counter for visits that the website had received (unique IP in 24h or something similar)?
Of course some options are needed too for example allowing Admin to reset the counter using the ACP.
The counter can be shown in the footer, near the phpbb credit section.

Most hosting already has this and more in the site cpanel.

There might be "stats" MODS but I doubt they're popular enough to put that in the core. I wouldn't want/need it.

Could be added an option in ACP to show / hide the counter.

Not all hosts use cpanel.

Also a php script counter returns a text counter that could be formatted as needed.

Most hosts have a cpanel-like interface with some sort of stats monitor.

That's so imprecise (addresses of the same user can change, different IP versions of the same user have different addresses, multiple users might share the same address, proxies, VPNs...) that the count has no meaning.

There are already views per topic counted - a more "simple" approach is to just cache a sum of all topic views and display that.

My only aim is to be cordial with readers.

This is interesting observation. It could be added a cookie that expires in 12/24h that verify if it is the same user that views the site.

This is an interesting further implementation, but this gives the total pages viewed not the amount of users that visited the site: each user can view one or more pages at time.
