Automated Mod-Comments

Post by D@ve » Fri Nov 29, 2013 9:37 am

I guess everybody knows the daily job as an admin/mod... Move topics, split topics, lock topics...

In most forums the mods add an appropriate comment in the affected topic.
- "The topic was splitted >LINK_TO_NEW_TOPIC<"
- "The topic was splitted FROM >LINK_TO_OLD_TOPIC<" (in the first Post of the new Topic)
- "The topic has been locked because..."
- "The topic has been moved, please choose the right forum next time..."
etc.

These comments are pretty much the same everytime. Would be great if you could automate this comments. If do stuff like that, there's always the AreYouSure-Screen. There could be a small select list where you can choose from a couple of predfined reasons for the action.

e.g.
Reason for lock:
- offtopic
- spam
- insulting

This would save a lot of time. And sometimes it's better for the atmosphere if a mod (who may be emotionally envolved) won't have to write a comment by himself.

+1 for this, but the list of mod comments have to be customized by admin/staff as well as the "! "Report this post" feature.
Please explicate why you voted negative or positive, so it will be possible to better understand each one's point of view.

+1 if by "comment" you mean the post edit reason.

Nope, I meant a comment that is posted in the topic.

I thout about a list where you can define
- reason (title that appears in the quick-mod-List)
- action (split/close/move)
- comment (the comment posted in the thread)

e.g.:
Reason: Spam

Action: close topic

Comment: This topic has been closed for spam reasons, please consider terms of use for further information.
Reason: Offtopic Discussion

Action: Split topic

Comment: The Discussion is offtopic, please continue at the following link: {URL_TO_NEW_TOPIC}

Why not pre-filling the post edit reason instead? Why having a separate "moderator comment"? And if: should it be per topic or per post?

a) it's not supposed to be there. If you close a topic why use the edit reason? We at our forum, almost edit never edit posts (I hate censorship).

b)
If you write in a topic... Say on page 1... Other people are writing... and writing and writing and writing... The current discussion has reached page 5. And than comes a mod along and changes your post on page 1 and deleted a forbidden link/spam/whatever. Will you recognize that?

>I< for myself never read my old posts again in a forum. If a mod changes something I will never know. This is why the edit reason won't help much for moderation. Every forum I know write the Mod comments in a seperate post below the discussion (we use a special Color for mod comments).

  • Editing does not imply modifying the post text; the edit reason is there for every attribute of a post. Don't confuse censorship with manipulation.
  • If a moderator edits one of my posts he'll surely have a reason (and to stay transparent and consistent he should add a post edit reason). I won't recognize that in the first sight. However, on our board I added a module to list all post edit reasons for oneself - there you can see what moderators did to you (and how you failed to follow rules).

Sorry Brf you are right, I expressed in a bad English the concept in my mind:

I meant "...but the list of mod comments have to be customized by admin/staff in a similar manner as the "! "Report this post" feature"

My excuses.
