I disagree, it should be up to the user if he wants to open a link in a new window or not.

I disagree. It's up to the admin if he wants his links to open in a new window just like it's up to the admin to give permissions and install MODs/Extensions/styles/languages that he wants. If the admin *doesn't* force new links in a new window THEN it should be up to the user.

I don't know that this should be in the core though, that's different than who should choose new windows. If it's optional...maybe. If it's default, no.

Modern browsers give user the choice for new window or not.

Unless the code "onclick="window.open" forces a new window, right?

IMO internal links should always open in the same window/tab (Unless popping a form or similar requires different) and external links should always open a new window/tab.

Some internal links, maybe. When I use WordPress as the home page and /forums for phpBB, I prefer to open the forums in a new window even though it's technically an internal link within the same domain. The FAQ, search, UCP/MCP/ACP and a few others wouldn't be *bad* as a new window.

I certainly wouldn't want *all* links to default to a new window but if it was optional and not default then I have less of a problem with it being a setting in the core.

Only with JS enabled. A more "reliable" approach is the target attribute, but then again: good internet browsers allow you to ignore such crap.

Forcing links to not open in the same spot has always been and will always been a pain. Enforcing your subjective preferences (links opening, richtext editor, JS gimmicks, Farcebook likes, background music, etc...) to others will only lower acceptance.

I used that code as an example because that's what the KB suggests but the point is that it would default to opening in a new window unless somebody installs a browser plugin that changes that default and that's what OP suggested.

If it's an option, it's not that bad but I still wouldn't do it for all pages.

I just don't understand why people are against external links opening new tabs/windows. Must be my e-commerce background...Why do you want people navigating off/away from your site at any time? :?

@Volksdevil: I fail to find a connection between your first sentence (because it's annoying) and the question (the target is already "off/away" from my site - getting back to the previous site is virtually no difference: either I do ALT+LEFT or ALT+TAB or CTRL+TAB).

I'm just going off the amount of times I've been on a site, clicked an External link which opens in the same tab making it seamless (As though you are on the same site) and then...Hitting the close/X button and realising I've closed/lost the initial site. That's what I find annoying.

A new tab/window to me instantly lets me know I've opened a different/external website. And that the website I was on is still there in the same tab/window. That's what they are for, viewing different websites.

That's from my experience of being on the net since it began. (I don't want to remember how long that is/showing my age maybe) and it's a very basic web design rule. Anyway, I'm off to click 'Hosting' up top ^^ and then the first link 'Bluehost'...I may be a while as I may accidentally close the tab/window, after all I will have navigated away from phpbb. :P
