Ability to 'Name' Backups via ACP?

Post by Volksdevil » Sun Mar 02, 2014 10:50 pm

I've just gone to install a mod, and as usual I've backed up via the ACP before I do anything. When I backup, I always do it three times, one of each of gzip, bzip2, text and store them locally.

It just occurred to me that it would be handy to have a text input field to be able to name the backups so that we can easily know which one to use if required.

For example, I have just backed up and I would have called them 'Backup_before_news_admin_mod'.

Just an idea I had literally just now. There may already be something like this, or there may be a reason why it's a bad idea but here it is anyway.

Neil.

Hmm... why not. By doing this the following things have to be considered:
  1. Input must comply to underlying file system limitations. Either do it quick+dirty by only allowing roman letters and arabic numbers ([a-zA-Z0-9]*), because you can't expect any to store umlauts or even Unicode. Or do it less restrictive, but that needs much more extra work for individual file systems.
  2. The restore mode must also expect such filenames.

The problem is probably not my English but you do not want to understand correctly.

If giving backups names is a problem, how about adding some sort of note to backups that can be read from the ACP without installing the backup. Then you could read all the notes from restore to double-check you were installing the correct backup.
