Upgrade Assistance Tools

Post by MohamedAG »

Archive Old Topics
Create an archive table with topic id as reference to an html file instead of topic table row for specific date range. (topic id will be intact but topic content will be stored in an html file) ---Optional

Empty Heavy Tables
Delete all data from prefix_search_wordwatch and similar tables that could be regenerated after upgrade and save more sql update process wither by the system or direct sql update.

Split Large Tables
Split large tables to smaller files and apply the database update to these small files to be run individually during system upgrade... Avoiding timeouts and database corruption.

Disabling Extensions and non-default Styles
Automatically disable all extensions and styles (but the default) during upgrade.

This features will be very helpful with people who do not have VPS or DS and yet have a very very large board. It will be a tool that could be used over and over since it has no relationship to the main code and will require less maintenance.

Files you could easy replace them with the new ones.... Database however is not.

All for empty heavy and splitting tables. That would save a lot of errors on bigger sites.

I agree with the principal idea of reducing the risk of timeouts, however saving content in html files is overkill since very phpBB user with a functional brain will already have taken a (and possibly more) backup.
I see quite a few NO votes by phpBBteam-members but no arguments so I'm hesitant to give a YES because I suspect I'm not seeing the pitfalls as yet.
Is there a NO-voter willing to share his concerns?
We should embrace problems, without which there wouldn't be any solutions.

My view would be that there enough problems with updates/upgrades and adding these options (which I don't totally disagree with) has the potential to create even more problems.

Also as the update/upgrade process is being incorporated into to the core and run from the ACP (not sure when but it has been rumoured in 3.3) this may be unnecessary, possibly even undesirable.

Thanks for the info.
Then yes, no point in voting for even 1 of the (sub)proposals.
