Allow Displaying Full Name if Using LDAP

Post by Ideas Bot » Sun Jan 07, 2018 2:09 am

For companies and schools that use LDAP, most users are real people that we personally know. It's a little different from the anonymous nature of how phpBB is usually implemented.

The issue currently is that when users in a company post something to phpBB, the "posted by" field shows only the user's username: something like trs843, which means very little to most other users. We are getting a lot of complaints from users about this. Users want it to show the full name.

This would mean the following would have to be implemented:

--On the Authentication page when "LDAP" is selected, there will need to be an optional field for the LDAP display name attribute (similar to the current "LDAP email attribute")
--Somewhere in phpBB, there will need to be an option that reads something like "Show user's full name instead of username if using LDAP" so that the feature has to be turned on

What is LDAP ?
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
It's a protocol (network/application) allowing retrieving information from a hierarchic directory structure e.g; Login name = User1, who has a realname, a birthdate, a location etc.

I'm not convinced that LDAP is necessary to achieve what the TS wants but I a convinced that this would need some serious thinkthrough because a user should have the option of not showing his realname and this probably requires a couple of extra configuration (and permission) settings.
A bug is a feature that hasn't made it to the manual (yet)

And another idea worded unneedingly restrictive: why doing that only for LDAP? It's the old feature of "username and displayed name" (old because there were boards long times ago where one could do that, unbound to LDAP).

That is what you want, and you should have stopped right there. But your words mean that there'd be the feature of a displayed name that would otherwise be unusable to every owner not using LDAP.

However, keep in mind that this is also asking for trouble as then most (if not all) users cannot distinguish between username and displayed name anymore - if you ask for one of both they'll surely answer with the wrong one. Not to think about how addressing PMs and searching members will ever work...

LDAPs are used as global authorisation source in many companies.

The informations about user's full names are in many installations already stored in LDAP, they must only be extracted from there. Currently, as far as I read the code in the auth-file, the ldap-userid (which is a text string depending on companies userid conventions) is used as phpBB-username, full name is not read. So I think the OP is suggesting to expand the return values form LDAP access with more informations and store them in phpBB users informations (maybe in core profile fields, maybe in custom defined profile fields).

In a corporate environment, it doesn't make sense to give users choice about this. The board administrator should make that choice.

That is correct. This is solely for LDAP implementations.

Yes, as long as the display/full name can be retrieved from LDAP and replace the username in all instances, it should be fine.
