Multi-site support with same shared code-base

Post by Ideas Bot » Tue Jan 30, 2018 8:45 am

As Drupal and other software. phpBB must support multi site with same shared code base. Every Site will have a folder for config.php file and files, cache and store folders. This will reduce code maintenance and save space for who have mutli boards.

Why must it? Are you saying that every other software package that is available already does this?

For that reason (almost) every file system supports folders.

Most of major software support multi-site:
  • WordPress
  • Joomla
  • Drupal
  • XenForo
  • Magento
It will be an optional feature. The Important thing is supporting it by the core.

Supporting this out of the box adds an extra layer of complexity to account for while it's only beneficial to a small number of installations. I would leave this to extensions.

In the past there was a system called echoforums that did something similar. I've worked with it and hated it. Also the benefit -even for those maintaining multiple installations - is minimal. Because with any update you'd need to make sure every installation is updated at the same time because DB, styles and filesystem would need to be in line with each other. That makes updating a bigger task that can't be split into several smaller tasks. The diskspace benefit is minimal since the core filesystem is only about 25MB large. Most space is used by attachments usually.
