Rating of Topics my Members

Post by Andreas_B » Tue Nov 26, 2019 8:18 am

Hi,

I recently asked for an extension, that could give the Users of a Forum the ability to rate a Topic, for ex. by 1-5 stars.

Unfortunatley there is none that works with the current phpbb version.

I think it would be nice, to have such a function.

Regards

Similar to +1, Like, or something similar; will be rejected as idea most likely because not important enough for the core product.

I've probably written something similar in earlier posts but what the hell, there's no law against repetition ;) so here goes
The problem with this kind of request (even though it is a much wanted feature) is that
  1. there are a plethora of rating methods: a score/value, a like, a verbal rating, progress bars, icons, etc...
  2. many rating systems are biased by favouritism (for users)
  3. it enhances clicking instead of writing
I won't go as far as to call it bloat but it would be probably need a massive effort to provide something which pleases everyone.
Extension? Yes, I'm all for it. Default feature? No because there'll always be something wrong with it (for many).

Not sure I understand what this is. Surely the rating of a topic is subjective and what does it mean?

I can understand, although not necessarily agree with, the rating of a reply within a topic.

In my opinion the any rating of a topic can lead to more problems with topics being rated up/down for the wrong reasons and I do not see how it enhances a board.

hmm, I wasn't alert and the "Topic" part didn't sink.
So definitely no to topic rating.

This makes more sense to me. I realise this isn’t the same as the OP is asking but it shows that there’s a shift against this kind of thing.

One of several articles on the subject of removing likes.

Additionally: topics can be split or merged - how should existing ratings then be treated? Details, details...

disable this function for rated topics.

I must say, I also thought about when members shall be able to rate a topic.

There must be some input already, before you could decide whether you want to give it 1 or 5 stars.

So in my eyes, the only solution here is to specify from which page on the rating would be possible.

For ex. only from page 5.

That would mean, members would have to read the first 5 pages, before they can click the 1-5 star button.

And if a topic stays under 5 pages, it won't be rated, as it is not relevant enough.

Depending on which subjects you discuss in a bulletin board, the quality of topics is very important.
Because topics can easliy become 100 pages long and more; therefore having some quality 'filter' here, before starting to read, wouldn't be that bad idea.

At least as extension.

No one is interested:
viewtopic.php?f=496&t=2530361

And I didn't know that this idea section is only about standard applications for phpbb...

That request was only posted a few days ago, patience and all that. I can almost guarantee that if you can’t raise any interest in extensions then there’s no chance of getting it added to the core.
