Reporting Profiles

Post by Random American »

I think there should be a report function to directly report profiles in a similar way posts can be reported. I mean, some people (mostly spambots) post bad links and other garbage right into the profile fields or signature, so I think being able to directly report that would be helpful. Sometimes the content is there before they start posting, making the report post function not applicable in some situations.

I get that I could just PM a staff member, but I think it would be better if the report were lodged where all moderators Administrators can see it.

instant upvote for that one

I mean like, someone could have an inappropriate username or signature.

Indeed, thanks, I didn't even think about usernames when I posted this. I think I saw someone with a questionable username on this site once, though they've never posted.

I saw someone called 'dumbass' on this site as well

It isn't really inappropriate but it is rude

Only issue that I see with this request is changing a users profile information is an Admin permission ('a_user') and not a moderator permission.

You're right, I forgot about that. With that in mind, I think this can still work if only Administrators can see those types reports though.

It is simple enough to report a user's post and say that their profile is inappropriate.

There is one issue with reporting profiles and that is that the user can change it between it being reported and somebody looking at it which could mean that the reporter may appear to have a grudge against another member.

The same thing can happen when posts are reported and we have a report post feature.

The report function (the ! among the action buttons when viewing post has options: of which

[Inappropriate content]:...
[Avatar]:...
[Signature]:...
[The reported message does not fit ...]
should suffice to be able to explain the "problem"

I've used it countless times and the moderators seem to have understood it every time. (but perhaps that's only thanks to my incredibly clear way of expressing myself in these situations  - no merit on their part)

I'm not going to give a negative vote as the idea as such isn't wrong as such , just not that important.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

What if they don't have any posts, though?

Find another way, e.g. PM, and if that isn't available, mail to the board's contact address, and if it's not displayed: it's probably a sign the board's administration is not interested in which case the report profile button (if that existed) wouldn't be available either.

warmweer,

Just curious, have you reported a profile via PM here?

Not that I remember, but I remember having reported a true infringment in a signature using the report button a couple of months ago, and once PM-ed a moderator about a user, can't remember the name exactly but I think it was something similar to Randy Morrocan :P ;) (just joking 8-) )
Come to think of it, yes, I have reported a couple of profiles by PM (probably 4 or 5 in about 17 years ).

I haven't felt comfortable doing that, but I see now why you don't view this as important.
