phpBB PWA

Post by halil16 »

Imagine our phpBB forum sites hosted on phones or computers like an app. Looking at it, it is no different from an application. Yes I am talking about PWA. This is a great feature that will take phpBB forums to the next level.

From Xenforo, the biggest alternative to phpBB, I would like to give this example: https://xenforo.com/community/threads/p ... pp.181448/

The nice thing about this is that when we click on our forum address in the search results or click on our forum link elsewhere, the PWA application opens immediately.

A shortcut link can be added to the quick links. And this PWA application disappears when downloaded. When the normal browser is opened, it may say "Switch to Application".

Also, Push Notifications are just as important. There is a paid phpBB plugin. This shows that this is possible. Already have a Push Notifications idea: viewtopic.php?f=436&t=2245421

I think the settings such as icon, short name, opening screen and type should be taken care of from the ACP.

Yours respectfully.

Why are you voting negative? Can you tell me the reasons? Do they have more damages than their benefits? Difficult to do or need a lot of time?

Why are you voting negative?
Because I do not believe that it is something that is a core requirement - as an extension, then maybe

That in itself is enough for me to vote no.

It would be great to have a choice to apply

Those who do not want to open the PWA feature will not. Moreover, this is what I'm talking about only for those who install the forum's PWA app.

Yes I am talking about PWA.
I like to be an informed voter. PWA - What does PWA stand for? The Free Dictionary or PWA - Wikipedia indicate many possibilities.
I'm guessing the three letter acronym (TLA) is progressive web application (PWA).

Most certainly. You can choose to install an extension or not. ;)

I think I should have requested an extension. I thought this would be great for phpBB and presented it as an idea here. Even in Wordpress, this requires a plugin.

Oops. I already have a request: viewtopic.php?f=496&t=2579666

Why do senior phpBB developers like you not want this feature?

I think PWAs are neat and we could/should look into it some time after the new style comes out in 4.0. However I also think a working extension as a proof of concept would be a good start to identify what is needed and then send a PR with all that. I see talk about service workers which I'm not sure are needed in a first iteration.

I'm also seeing mention of the paid extension that enables notifications on mobile devices so I'll warn you now that this extension requires some additional PHP library extensions to be enabled which may not be possible in all cases.

Thank you so much. I also want to give an information like this: When a manifest.json file is set, it opens like PWA when we use the "add to home screen" shortcut.

I'm very excited about phpBB4 and the new style. When do your think it will be released?

Probably when it's ready, which is expected before phpBB 5 RC1.
Actually, just follow Area51.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.
