https://youtu.be/VMw0EjLFPXw works perfectly in media embed, this is a result of clicking share on youtube.
This is incorrect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMw0EjLFPXw.
Its always advisable to start your own topics.

Actually that's the one I tried (so optimistically!), but it has the same issue as the youtype code, as per my example, in that phpBB isn't recognising and parsing the bb code. What else could it be? (btw, hosted by Siteground)
Thanks for the advice regarding thread starting, in some places they discourage new threads on similar topics.
The one I didn't expect to work, works on this forum but not mine i.e. just the YouTube video id between youtube tags.
How do I format a link to show here without it creating the embed?
Thanks
Mark

With BBcodes, very often, the exact link style must be used. That's why the extension Mick linked to is preferred these days as it's not reliant on the link style.
The extension needs no tag codes around the link. You just post it as it is.

Surround it with the [c] tag like:

If it’s general discussion about gerbils then maybe but technical discussions need specific details and no two setups are indentical hence it’s better to start your own topic. Also, there are no threads in phpBB, they are topics.
