Extension Name: Favicon

Extension Download: Favicon 1.0.1

Installation: Copy contents from download to ext/sniper/favicon/ directory - Enable in ACP

Demo: Sniper_E Styles - Check out your address bar for the image.

Instructions: The favicon is supposed to be a set of 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 pictures in ICO format.
You can find many .ico generators online to convert your image into a favicon.ico.
Use one frame from your animated.gif image you are using to create a favicon.ico file.
The animated image and favicon are located in ext/sniper/favicon/images/ directory.
Simply replace the images with your own for your site.

Enjoy!

Why do you need an extension for this when just uploading an animated favicon file will work anyway?

it adds <link rel="icon" href="" /> that the extension Favicon Notifications needs added to styles that is missing so it's actually a useful extension in my opinion for those that do not want to edit files

Well David, after disabling the favicon ext...
I tried to put my animated icon in the root and renamed it to favicon.ico and it would not show.
Even my normal favicon.ico would not show. I'm running 3.1.9 maybe it's not setup for that yet.

I cleared the cache and refreshed my browser. I'll give it more time to see if it will show.
I'll keep testing...

I'll remove that Lumpy. New founder working on site and it's not setup correctly yet.

I could not get any animated favicon to show up in the address bar.

You know David, if phpBB would make it where it looks for a second favicon.gif...
It will load a favicon.gif with these <links, then we could place a favicon.ico and a favicon.gif in the root.

It would load the favicon.ico and then load the favicon.gif if the browser was compatible. Like most.
Else it would keep the favicon.ico as the favicon.

Then this ext would not be needed for an animated favicon if that was setup...
And the Favicon Notifications ext wouldn't need this either.

Style updates are not effected neither any browser types or any version of phpBB.
phpBB could have their blue two member icon show and in time fades into another phpBB related icon.
You phpBB guys here should install my ext right away! just kidding

I was wrong. My link to phpBB Modders got mixed up. I had the wrong address. I fixed it in my sig.
Our new founder there had everything setup nicely... my bad.

Thanks for pointing that out Robert!

This was probably answered by the first post after you posted, but besides those reasons I find it sometimes unreliable to just plop the file in the site root and assume that viewing from the forum directory will pick it up. That might be because the browser is caching the previous icon it had found.
Sniper_E wrote:It would load the favicon.ico and then load the favicon.gif if the browser was compatible. Like most.
Else it would keep the favicon.ico as the favicon.

And the Favicon Notifications ext wouldn't need this either.
I used to work for a company that had bought error monitoring software for all sites they host. One of the top errors in the IIS logs was always the favicon.ico being missing. In order to "resolve" the error a favicon.ico file was added to every single site root, which made some clients a bit unhappy since it was the company logo, not theirs. In order to keep the same code base for everyone a client specific image was created for those that requested it and it was referenced using the <link> tag to an image processor that would determine which image was the right one.

Now circling back to your extension and thinking about that small and insignificant experience, having 2 references to a couple of images that may or may not exist is not likely something we'd want to do. We currently don't even include a default one either.

P.S. you're missing the proper topic prefix. Please fix.

Thank you for that explanation and info DavidIQ.
I went simi-idle with this ext but I will proceed with it now.
DavidIQ wrote:P.S. you're missing the proper topic prefix. Please fix.
I set this ext to [RC] for the reason it does what it does and works well just the way it stands.
I see there is no need, imo, to expand this so I will keep it just the way it is. Simple.

I'll submit to the ext db and see what happens. Thanks for your input everyone.

Sorry DavidIQ, you ended up being correct. But I forgot to change the prefix after denial. Done!

I'll have to come back and give this ext some more attention. Maybe add some acp options.
