I wouldn't even do that...bloat ;) (Would complicate the currently simple and straight forward javascript code).

I guess we are talking about two different types of behaviors. 1. the current user going to look up a specific rule and 2. someone looking up a rule for someone else. For 2, highlighting on clicking the link makes sense, but it does not for 1.

I guess I'd agree that this probably is something we do not want, but it would be very easy to write up some JS for someone's own board to do it the other way. I'd recommend putting that JS in a separate extension so one would not have to worry about editing this extension or having a difficult time with updates.

I'm struggling to see a reason why there should be a difference.

Like for [1], why do we have two anchors behaving differently? Why should a singular rule highlight, and a 'set' of rules not? To me it seems like an error in design. Especially if the category anchors are at the bottom of the page, they won't be obvious at all.

Example: If I was to show somebody to the 'Policing rules' on my board which are at the very bottom of the page http://www.corradog60.com/rules.php#policing Imagine if it wasn't highlighted. :| where would your eyes be drawn to? Top of the page? Pick any random text? Can you be bothered to try and find the set of rules you're supposed to read?

But because it's highlighted (When on the page), your eyes jump straight to it...Like is already the case with individual rules/anchors!

Even on here it seems wrong to me...
Clicking Here or Here shows why categories need to be highlighted. The page is at the bottom on BOTH rule sets...Imagine if they weren't highlighted...

Anyway, I'm easy either way  The categories do highlight when linked to...I just don't see why they behave differently when on the actual page.

That's a different question entirely, before you were asking about why it highlights when you follow the link from somewhere else, but not when clicking the link to the anchor while already on the rules page.

The phpBB rules page does not highlight the categories when the link is clicked on from the top navigation on the page, only if you open a link to them from somewhere else. The rules are highlighted if the anchor from each rule is clicked however.

That's exactly what I mean, just explaining it via means of hypothetically being on the page.

If you go to the rules page on here and click both Policing and then Translation forums, where are your eyes drawn to? Top of the page? Middle? Anywhere? The page lands at the same spot on each link. If it highlighted on the other hand...Like the rest of the anchors do... :!:

The individual rule anchors are not navigational. There is no reason to click on them except to get their URL to copy/paste and send to another user. They highlight on clix to help people see that is a behavior of them when linked to individually.

The anchor links to categories are navigational and that's why they do not highlight, unless when loaded as the direct result of somebody who was sent to them from a copied link, just as they would with individual rules.

Hope that puts this to bed.

Of course they are navigational! :?
If you choose a rule at the bottom of the page and link to it, where does the page load?

If you choose a rule at the bottom of the page, while on the page, where does the page load/jump to?

That's right...At the anchor you linked to via both linkins. Just because the link is placed somewhere else on the page or has different text, doesn't mean it's not navigational. It's an anchor on a page, a point that the page jumps to.

Both links have a navigational anchor:
example1.com/one#Anchor1
example2.com/two#Anchor2

I've been web designing for years and never heard something so silly. I could start saying that the links in the menu aren't navigational using your rationale because once you scroll down the page, they are no longer seen... ;) Anyway, agree to disagree.

The anchors right next to rules are anchor points. That's why they are displayed as hash tags. A link adjacent to its very content is not meant for navigation. They are only displayed for copy paste purposes.

Bottom line is the behavior is designed as intended. You're welcome to change it to your liking on your own board.

Fair play if it's intended...
VSE wrote:A link adjacent to its very content is not meant for navigation.
Though they do work, and are HTML coded as navigation. :)

I'm probably going to leave it 'As is' on 3.1, purely because extensions work really well so I don't want to have to make code changes if possible. It's just a small styling issue at the end of the day.

Anyway, I don't want to clutter the topic...Good work, keep it up 8-)

Guys, If I update, will I lose all the rules I've currently set? I don't think I will but just want to be sure :)

You shouldn't do - if you keep the same database. I didn't.

Good stuff, Just as I thought. I really do like the way these extensions are working. 8-)
Edit: Updated just fine, and also managed to put back my own little tweaks (Language and styling) :D

I prefer the anchor links to be at the beginning of the rule, as it can end up looking strange if you use lists within a rule.
