Extension Name: Scroll To Top
Author: VSE

Extension Description: Adds a scroll to top button making it easy to return to the top of any page. Pure CSS/Javascript (no images or text). Requested here (viewtopic.php?f=496&t=2257531).

Extension Version: 1.0.0-b1

Requirements:
  • phpBB 3.1.0-RC3 or higher
  • PHP 5.3.3 or higher
Demo: http://vsephpbb.github.io/scrolltotop/

Repository: https://github.com/VSEphpbb/scrolltotop

Important: This Extension can only be installed on phpBB 3.1. Do NOT use this on a live board. It should only be installed for testing purposes or just to check it out. No support will be provided.

Is there any possibility that this, or another extension, could be made to be an up/down scroll - dependant on where you are on the page?

Not here. Never even seen a scroll down before. This one is just the common scroll to top.

No, but I also don't see the value in jumping to the bottom of a page, unlike returning to top, which is why I've only ever seen scroll to tops. At any rate, this is named Scroll To Top, so that's what this will remain.

Just a minor detail. When you rapidly move the scrollbar up and down the point that causes the scroll-to-top button to appear and then you suddenly stop, the button will disappear and reappear (i.e. blink) for a couple of seconds.

Most implementations I've seen have the same behaviour - like this one:

I've seen a few who don't - like this one (at least I tried it and failed :P):
