In theory, it should be as easy as:
  • Disable Thanks for posts 2.0.3-dev
  • Delete /ext/gfksx/ThanksForPosts folder
  • Copy Thanks for posts 2.0.4 files into /ext/gfksx/thanksforposts folder (the difference is - all letters are lowercased)
  • Reload the manage extensions ACP page
  • Enable Thanks for posts 2.0.4
Never do it on production forums, as usually.

Also note that current version of the Addon for Thanks for posts (to ajaxify things) won't work with ver. 2.0.4.
This update method does not work for me. This warning appears that I indicate with the arrow:

Therefore I had no choice but to rerturn to the previous version (2.0.3-dev)

that is because you didn't follow the instruction properly. You can get this warning in the middle of updating process but no way at the end of it.
You have to get to the last step to judge if updating worked or not.

I already tried. If I continue with the last step I get an error in acp and the board is inaccessible.

No you didn't. On your screenshot, Thanks for posts 2.0.4 is not enabled.
If you enable it, the "warning" will disappear.
As I said above, complete the last step of the instruction first.

What error?
Also please note that ver.2.0.4 is not compatible with phpBB 3.1.x.

Hmm, that looks like a bug.
EDIT: the fix is not ready yet, looking into it deeper.

Hello again.
I just tried right now with the new repo and the same error appears.

PS: Anyway, the previous version (2.0.3-dev) works correctly in phpBB 3.2.2 to me.
Then I ask: why should I update it?

You shouldn't.
The extension just had been renamed from ThanksForPosts to thanksforposts for technical reasons and is going to be released under this new name. So the old named one kinda won't be updated anymore.

So I'm trying to provide smooth update process from the old-named version but it fails in some cases.

Oh good to know - is that why the Addon doesn't work with it? Should be a really easy fix...
