[ABD] phpBB Initial Avatars (Lite)

Based on the awesome work of: LasseRafn

Extension description: Give your users a unique default avatar like Google Mail, Wordpress etc..

Requirements:

phpBB >= 3.2.1

Extension version: 1.0.2-beta
Extension download: n/a

Please keep in mind this is experimental/bleeding edge code, therefore you MUST perform a DB backup prior to use it. Still the advice to do not use extensions in development on production boards applies.

The extension will automatically backup on a separate custom DB table all of the user's avatars in order to prevent any possible issue, emergency tools have been coded in order to rescue those data if necessary.

Languages support:

UTF-8 Unicode plus some special chars

Arabic
Armenian
Bengali
Georgian
Hebrew
Mongolian
Chinese
Thai
Tibetan

Wordpress uses it so I think there shouldn't be issues.

Looks very promising!

Question: Do background colors depend on the initials or is it always the same color? If so, is there any chance of adding some randomness or dependency to the background based on the initials?

Like A is always color 1, B is always color 2, C is always color 3, ...

Randomness has been already planned, yes.
No relationship with letters though.

I plan to release a Lite version soon, the core will be the natural fallback of the Full one.
Options and colorpickers and what not will be in ACP/UCP.

The Lite version of this will make the use of the Web API from the same Author, which just added support for lowercase, as per my request. See this image

I posted some grabs from my environment, I am making the use of this API with another extension of mine, as a proof of concept though, see:

Are the images generated and stored locally on each forum's owner's server or served via LasseRafn's service?

We are talking about the Lite version here (Web API usage), the final images are cached by the server (edit: 2 days atm, I opened an issue over there though) and from there served. No usage tracking and no information is stored.

Right since today DigitalOcean it is sponsoring the server adding these regions for now

Resulting on a very fast service (I tried with a small array of 500 users and the image size to the max (256px)).

Ofcourse the Full version will use another approach, more heavy PHP side, and the internally generated Imgs could be stored in the DB/files, I have to investigate the extension validation's Policies first.

We are discussing further enahncements to the API atm.
I've already coded the whole extension, though it could be way better if those above will be implemented.

No ETA, isn't like cooking some spaghetti.
