Hi!

david63: When do you think this extension will be ready to download from the Extensions DB? :) Will it be submitted for validation anytime soon?

Thanks in advance.

Going to try one last post and I will leave it at that as dont want to spam this thread any more than what i've done.

Instruction says
Upload the unzipped files to [board root]/ext/david63/privacypolicy

So I have copied the files to the privacypolicy folder as instructed an exact copy is as follows
/httpdocs/forum/ext/david63/privacypolicy/david63-privacypolicy-3.2

No sign of it in my ACP 'Manage extensions' :?:

You should have [board root]/ext/david63/privacypolicy/composer.json (and the other files/folder)

No idea - it has not been submitted yet and then it depends on how many issues are found with it

Big: No! (to the red thing).

There has to be the content of the whole extension, not a new folder with the content in it.

When you create a translation there is a text box at the top with the policy name pre filled in (Cookie Policy) which you can/should change to be in your own language. The only way that you could change it is by editing the database as I have not built in an editing procedure for that field.
Hello David.
Would not it have been easier for the translators than the text of the different policies to be in separate text files in the languages folder?

Code: Select all

EN\
	Cookie Policy.txt
	Privacy Acceptance.txt
	Privacy Policy.txt
	Terms Of Use #2

DE\
	Cookie Policy.txt
	Privacy Acceptance.txt
	Privacy Policy.txt
	Terms Of Use #2

FR\
	Cookie Policy.txt
	Privacy Acceptance.txt
	Privacy Policy.txt
	Terms Of Use #2
And to have the possibility to add other text files related to the subject

Nope, all above my level of knowledge and dont understand the instructions. Going to have to give up.

Like I said i've tried
1) Adding the new download/extension (david63-privacypolicy-3.2) into the ext folder along with all my other extensions - Didnt work
2) Tried following the advice by creating the directory root/ext/david63/privacypolicy then adding the new files into that - Didnt work

Strange as i've added extensions before without issue. Know its user error my side and do appreciate the offer of help. I will leave it at that. Thanks.

Possibly - but there is no facility to have .txt files and be able to manipulate them. But the main issue is that an extension must be "self contained" that is all files must be in the extension. Yes there are ways around that by saving them to the store folder, but creating/editing/manipulating them is not that easy.

When creating any extension there are quite often alternative ways of doing things and as extension developers we all make decisions, be they right or wrong, at that time.

Basically, in this case, it will normally be a "one off" and in my view this is the easiest way around the problem.

I looked at your admin panel & ftp, and the ext is in the right place.
But your server & forum are doing some very strange things.

No matter what I change, the changes wont show. Looks like a cache issue. Or your server is messing things up.. I renamed the forum folder, and your forum is still working, normally it should break when I rename that folder.. I also renamed current installed extensions, and the just keep on working.. There are also some problems with the tapatalk extension, your extension tab is giving an sql error. This is beyond my knowledge, sorry ..

Good evening David.
It seems that there is a bug on the management of "Policy file options".
When editing the policy for other languages, it is possible to determine (or not) the "Policy file name".

When updating the policy text:
  • If we do not change the name, we find it twice with the same name of policy.
  • If we change the name, we end up with the original name + the new name!
The both names points to the same text and at first glance, it is not possible to delete the excess lines!

1st Time I go to "Policy file options" : https://goopics.net/i/opbnG
I update the text : https://goopics.net/i/Owo12
2 same lines : https://goopics.net/i/PRkjO

In addition, it appears that it is not possible to translate policy text directly into the extention installation file. It is therefore mandatory to install and then manually update the text of each policy for each language. If you use multiple languages, it's really not very convenient.

It is a shame that this is not handled by one or more files in the languages folder. :P
Yes, I know, it will cost me another bottle of wine.

I do not believe that there is a bug with this.

Correct - but essentially you have created a file in another language and not changed the title, even though there is a message recommending that you do.

Again correct. That is because you have two language files - the default Englisg one that needs to be there as a "fall back" and the new one in your language.

In addition, it appears that it is not possible to translate policy text directly into the extention installation file. It is therefore mandatory to install and then manually update the text of each policy for each language. If you use multiple languages, it's really not very convenient.
But this also has the advantage that you can install this extension without having a language file translation and you can have the policy files translatable in your language.

The other advantage by having the editor this way is that you can format the policy - something that is not easy in a language file and can create problems with an inexperienced user changing the text, plus there is the risk of loosing any changes whenever there is an update to the files.

I would also add that the text that I provide is only intended to be an "example" as I feel that there will be many users who will want to significantly change the text to their own and/or country version.

There is no right or wrong/better or worse ways to do this as both have their advantages and disadvantages. As I said before I had to make a decision on which way to go and one of the main underlying factors was the constraints with extensions about editing files which would be necessary if language files were used.

My ACP translations don't work (they did in rc4)..

Image

I translated and saved all the necessary sections of the p.policy (see the pic), but if a guest tries to change language to italian in the register page of my board https://allabouthd500x.altervista.org, the policy pages are still displayed in english..
