Just ask its author, we provided just support for ABBC3.

About the native phpBB's quick reply instead, no we will not add Emoji on it .

Maybe stupid question, but.. I need s9e Text formatter for this addon to work?

s9e Text formatter is built in phpBB 3.2.8+, so no, you don't need it specifically.

As rxu already mentioned, s9e TextFormatter is already a part of phpBB.
It's used to format texts, handling all bbcodes, smilies, links, etc.
It also already handles emojis, there just isn't a picker for it, which this extension provides.

I have made a PR : Emoji/pull/2
Kindly check it out.

Changes:

1. I have split Tabs which has too many emojies,
   also rearranged some misplaced emojies to it's rightful tabs.
2. Before 9 Tabs
   After PR 12 Tabs
3. This also causes the loading time to decrease on 1st/default tab,
   also on other tabs too.

Is it possible to display the emoji instead of the smileys? So you get something like this:
