Performance problem and server hangs....

Post by ducaconte.balabam »

Hello all,

I'm managing a site called that runs phpBB 3.0.0 and I'm getting many problems. Usually all goes ok but when traffic on forum increase (for example when search enginges robots come on your site), apache spawn many processes that try to access all to mysql that is not able to handle all requests and start getting more than 100% cpu, system load goes to 10 and more.... and a top status shows that cpu is more or less 98% in wa .

My biggest forum tables are:

399036 phpbb_posts.MYI
333192 phpbb_search_wordmatch.MYI
221592 phpbb_posts.TMD
221592 phpbb_posts.MYD
81792 phpbb_search_wordmatch.MYD
27664 phpbb_privmsgs.MYD
10800 phpbb_search_wordlist.MYI

Mysql options are:
back_log = 75
max_connections = 50000
key_buffer = 384M
myisam_sort_buffer_size = 64M
join_buffer_size = 16M
read_buffer_size = 16M
sort_buffer_size = 48M
table_cache = 1800
thread_cache_size = 384
thread_concurrency = 3
wait_timeout = 7200
connect_timeout = 10
tmp_table_size = 64M
max_heap_table_size = 64M
max_allowed_packet = 64M
max_connect_errors = 1000000
read_rnd_buffer_size = 524288
bulk_insert_buffer_size = 48M
query_cache_limit = 64M
query_cache_size =128M
query_cache_type = 1
query_prealloc_size = 65536
query_alloc_block_size = 131072
default-storage-engine = MyISAM

Cpu are two Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz and there's 1gb of RAM.

I know this is not best hardware of the world, but maybe there's some fixes or hint I can give to speedup the whole forum.

Can you check MySQL's slow queries log and see if anything is reported there? This shouldn't happen if everything is running right (there's also a possibility you may be outgrowing your server specs, but those specs should be good enough I'd say).
