default "Notify me when a reply is posted"

Post by Shasoosh »

i want to make the "Notify me when a reply is posted" checkbutton enabled by default for all new and current users in my forum. I did this:

OPEN
includes/functions_user.php

FIND
'user_notify' => 0,

REPLACE WITH
'user_notify' => 1,

but when new users are registered the "Notify me when a reply is posted" option is not ticked when posting a new comment.

Thanks

What do you mean "posting a new comment"? This is a setting in the UCP.

I believe you will have to change the default value of user_notify in the database to 1 and also change it for all existing users with this SQL:

Code: Select all

UPDATE phpbb_users SET user_notify = 1 WHERE user_id > 1;

Yes, I got it, it works well, thanks. But can you add this option to ACP for setting the default value with all users in forum?

They'll still be able to change it in their user control panel.

Quick questions on the scope of this mod, regarding when it works...

1. Does it work only for the topic authors or for all who have posted in that thread?

2. Does it work for old topics that a user has posted in prior to the mod being installed?
Thanks to everyone who has helped me thus far, and to all those who will in the future because I know I'll need it! :D

This mod just makes the "notify upon reply" set as "yes" upon initial registration...without the notify me is set to no.

Understood, but what triggers the notifications? I ask because I've installed the mod but have not been notified on any the post replies as of yet.

The notifications are triggered either via a post in a topic (and subsequent further post) or via subscription to that particular forum/topic. If you aren't getting them, then there is something else that is causing them to not be sent. Anything in your php error logs?

Here is how to do this, so it works fine without any mods being installed. And I think this is the best and correct way.

Like topic starter said, change this file first:

Code: Select all

OPEN
includes/functions_user.php

FIND
'user_notify' => 0,

REPLACE WITH
'user_notify' => 1,
Now to make it work you also have to change your database setting from: 0 to 1.

To do that, go into your phpAdmin and click the database field on the left side called (phpbb_users) near the bottom.

You should now be shown a new page that list loads of setting that you can put a TICK in a box on the left. Find the one called (user_notify) and put a tick in the box, and then click the "PENCIL" icon on the right of it (on the same line) to edit it.

Now in the box called (Default2), which is above the (extra) box, change the number from 0 to 1and save it.

Thats it!
