How to open a link with new tab in phpBB 3?

Postby nguyencongminh » Fri Aug 01, 2008 10:48 am

phpbb wrote:Additionally, phpBB features something called Magic Links, this will turn any syntactically correct URL into a link without you needing to specify any tags or even the leading http://. For example typing http://www.phpbb.com into your message will automatically lead to http://www.phpbb.com being output when you view the message.

In phpBB 2, when user clicks on links in the post, default: the browser will open it in a new tab (or windows). But in phpBB 3, default: the browser opens links with the same tab, how to change it?
Will i insert the code about="_blank" to ?
Thank for reading my post.

I've followed the KB article very carefully, but it is not working with my phpBB3 3.02. Links just open in the same tab as before in Firefox 3.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks.

It only works on old links if you edit and resubmit the post.

Try posting a new link and see if it works.

Yup. On my tablet. Try right clicking a link and dragging down a menu to "Open with new tab" with a stylus for an afternoon. You'll be ready to throw the thing across the room. Alternative - click the link and it opens in a new tab. It's a no brainer usability wise.

I think this is classic case of where the desire for technical purity has been put ahead of real world usability. People want new tab links. It is the most common complaint on my phpBB3 site.

I checked out the KB link just now.

I'm completely baffled by the fact that I'm unable to find this in my includes/functions_content.php
Code: Select all
    $html    = "$whitespace<!-- $tag --><a$class href=\"$url\">$text</a><!-- $tag -->$append";

**edit***

NEVER MIND!!!! Sorry to waste your time with this stupid post.

I used the above tutorial and it worked great! The only problem I have is every time a post with a link in it is quoted or edited it appends this to the end of it:
Code: Select all
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So if a quote is nested multiple times it will append every time. Is there any way to stop this behavior?

Did you do the edit listed under "Help phpBB read the output again" ?
