Groups / Ranks

Post by girlintrouble » Fri Aug 08, 2008 12:54 pm

Im not sure where to post this - if its in the wrong place pls move.

I understand how groups work but am not quite sure.

If I dont give any guest access then I can assume all users are registered users, then if I put them in a full member group they can see all the forums they could before plus those which are for full members alone. Hope thats right.

Admins and Mods are also registered members and likely in practice to be full members so if my previous permissions are good then this too should work. Can I make a forum such that a mod cannot read inside it? Say if it was an Admin only one or a completely separate group like 'My friends'? I think I can....

Ok then there are ranks, I was going to make groups, but then I realised that Im not restricting access based on some of these groups, the 'Guru' is actually a rank not a group in this instance.(?)

I can use rank avatars but then what happens if someone has more than one rank?
This is doing my head in a bit - Then there are usergroups.....  :?

Im losing the plot. Sitting in front of a doc trying to do these permissions etc before I implement them.... :? Its all merging into a mess in my head. Can anyone shed any light please?
Thanks

Interesting I didnt know we had tutorials, not bad however my question is slightly less to do with HOW to set those things up (still interesting to look at the tutorials tho) and more to do with appropriate usage, ie How it works, maybe I should have posted this is discussion forum... I know Im not asking the question very clearly. say with ranks can a person have more than one? or is it cumulative liek newbie, regular user, pro user.....obviosuly that lends itself easily to the use of ranks in its most obvious way. However what if its like a specialist rank say webdesigner, comms expert, programmer, someone may have more than one speciality? Am I able to do that?

How is a rank different to a group? It can be quite similar theoretically.

A user can have only one rank displayed through the standard phpbb rank system. There are ways to get other "ranks" to display, but that would require a MOD, like the one the kindly old gentleman referred you to above. Ranks are purely cosmetic and confer no permissions or privileges, so I wouldn't get too hung up on them.

Pitbull - Im rubbish at searching for things
Thanks, Im a bit reluctant to add too many mods, I have to do manual updates.... Might consider it.

Steve - so ranks are "cosmetic", then yes ur right, no point getting hung up.

Even though you still never solved your FTP issue with automatic updates, you could still take a copy of your board and do your updates offline on your local pc. It's not that difficult to do, see here for the principles:
http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/offline-conversions/

That article by Kevin is about Offline Conversions, but you can equally well use it to set up a local copy of phpBB3 and do an offline upgrade - just ignore the bits about phpBB2 and conversion.

The advantage to this approach is its a copy of your board, so if the upgrade goes wrong - no damage done to your live board.

clever clever clever!!!!! Yes! Thats a damn good plan. That brain of yours must need an extra heat sump and fan

Will read slowly and digest, however *having accepted that I might be stuck here) and then being told what u just said, Im wondering how I will ever move to 3.0.2 as now I have a style built for 3.0.1 and want to install the Paypal IPN mod which is also designed for 3.0.1. How will I ever move from this version? Oh boy my poor head...lol.

Well see, you can set up your local installation - then you can test all these things.

The MOD may be compatible with 3.0.2 - with an offline board you can try it out - no danger.
Ask the MOD author too, about compatibility :)

If the Style author hasn't updated the style you can use Raimon's Style changesto update it yourself, or choose a more actively maintained Style if the author isn't updating it.

You can take a day or a week to update your offline board - then only commit it back to the live Server once you're happy it's working.
