Problem banning Spammers Email

Post by Canis-Lupus »

Hi,

I'm having a problem with a spammer(s) who tries to register about 50 accounts per day on my board. The emails are either *@gmail.com or *.*.ru. I have banned these emails using the ACP but the spammer is still trying to register with these emails, despite them being in the ban list in the ACP. The registration was set to admin activated. I was still getting a constant stream of registrations with the above emails (always variations with the same above domains) despite the banning in the ACP.

I'm wondering what I might be doing wrong in the ACP for this ban not to take effect with this arsehole who tries to register all these accounts.

Just for now I have set the registrations to user validation. I can't imagine the spammer has all these emails which he is using. Each account is a different email address although they all use either gmail.com or some ".ru" one.

I take there is no need for a valid email address if registrations are set to admin activated? It would be good to have both methods avaliable for the one registration, both user & admin activation.

There's no use trying to ban the IP, that differs greatly. The best way would be to attack the problem via the email because that is what is most common about these registeations.

Alternatively, if anyone knows of a hitman out there who is willing to track down this person and put him in plaster for a small fee, I will consider their services.

join the queue.

50 a day does not sound like human registrations. Can you tell if the registrations are being done by humans or not.

Are you sure you have v3 as this is normally a v2 type problem.

Re the email disallows, are you sure you have them set right - I did hear of someone who was adding them as 'exemptions' rather than as disallowed/banned, which is obviously letting them in.

====

Assuming you do have v3, have you activated the GD capatcha or have you the only the v2 compatable easy to break one active.

Have you tried adding some custom profile fields.

As I keep coming accross the need to post details of the 'custom profile field' anti-spambot method, I have added it as a KB

Knowledge Base - Custom Profile Fields as an Anti-Spammer Tool

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply Chris.

I will bookmark all that and see what I can do with the info/fixes suggested.

Yes I'm pretty sure it is human, judging by the lame attempts at the nics. You can see it is someone who has some idea of English without really getting the way English speakers put together nics for forums.

Yes, capatcha is on.

Yes, version 3 (this refers to phpbb3 I assume)

Pretty sure I'm not making them exceptions. The ACP says exceptions will be "emphasised". I'm assuming that means the text for exceptions will stand out in some way. All on the list look to be in the same standard text.

That idea of a custom field looks interesting. I could have some fun with that.

Since I set the registrations to user activitated they have stopped, but I anticipate that is short term cure which may have worse consequences if left like that for too long. I've already got a regular idiot(s) who post porn spam, abusing the guest facility set on pre-approval for a particular sub-forum.

Ok, I am on the scent now. Thanks for your help.

That was due to a form of error.

KB articles should be checked for accuracy before being active for members to see, even if made by a team member.

Because I am a team member it activated it straight away, something I flagged to the support team.

Since then the article has been de-activated till it has been checked over by a support team member.

Look back in a couple of days - hopefully will be available then.
