Set users to subscribe by default?

Post by najamd » Tue Nov 04, 2008 8:38 pm

Hey Guys,
I was wondering is there any way to set users to subscribe by default to the postings and threads they create?
Thanks in advance,

nd

UCP -> Board Preferences -> Edit posting defaults -> Notify me upon replies by default

If you're trying to set EVERYONE to Yes then run this in MySQL:

Code: Select all

UPDATE phpbb_users SET user_notify = 1
You'll also need to run this to take care of new registrations:

Code: Select all

ALTER TABLE `phpbb_users` CHANGE `user_notify` `user_notify` TINYINT( 1 ) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '1'
Apply to become a Jr. Extension Validator

Thanks allot DavidIQ!,
So if i run this query...

Code: Select all

ALTER TABLE `phpbb_users` CHANGE `user_notify` `user_notify` TINYINT( 1 ) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '1'
It will set future users to automatically receive notifications on replies to there threads?

Actually...no. That step you might not even need to do. Forgot one more change.

Open up includes/functions_user.php

Find:

Code: Select all

		'user_notify'			=> 0,
Replace with:

Code: Select all

		'user_notify'			=> 1,
That should do it.

Don't you guys think this feature is kind of important and admins should have control over setting it as default?
:?

If you really want that sort of control I could turn this into such a MOD. Otherwise it's how the phpBB software devs wanted it. They were aiming for being as simple as possible. By making every single field in registration configurable...well...that wasn't going to simplify things.

Yeah.. but there are many things that are more complex then needed.. example permission management... its almost rocket science compared to the old version.. also if you by mistake delete first category and forum on a new forum... you need make them from scratch again and for a new user that is allot more complicated then it should be...

I don't think everything needs to be configurable but this is kind of important.. specially for new site... you want to stimulate growth and user receiving alerts on posts is best defaulted to be turned on i think.. otherwise as they say... out of sight, out of mind..

phpbb2 was exactly the same

Maybe it is important to you, but not necessarily to others.
specially for new site... you want to stimulate growth and user receiving alerts on posts is best defaulted to be turned on i think..
Again, your opinion but not everyone else's.
otherwise as they say... out of sight, out of mind..
This gets discussed a lot around here.
People automatically think that their ideas about the board are the correct ones. That is understandable, because we all think our ideas are the best.
However, the reality is that everyone has their own ideas. What you think should be default, I might absolutely hate.
Then I would be here asking why in the world anyone thought it was a good idea and how can I change it.

The developers make their choices and that is that. I am sure that they do a lot of research before making a choice about the features, settings of the board. I would assume that part of that research includes what requests/complaints users have made over the years.

So, once again, if you do not like the way something in phpbb works, change it.
That is what is so great about phpbb and other open source type scripts/software. YOU get to decide
how YOU want it to work for YOU. The alternative is using software that someone else controls how it works.

luck,
robert
I'm baaaaaccckkkk. still doing work on donation basis. PM your needs.
