ob_start('ob_gzhandler'); error

Post by helpfinder » Tue Dec 09, 2008 8:29 pm

Hi all,
now I logged in to my forum and in the top of page is:
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /includes/functions.php on line 3540: ob_start() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler 'ob_gzhandler' conflicts with 'zlib output compression'

I didn´t edit to any file last few days - today I was a few timed logged in and this error wasn´t there.
I tried to clear cache - no success
I compared functions.php on FTP with the one from original phpbb3 set - the same (alson on line 3540)

I tried to access administrator panel - after login there is:
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /adm/index.php on line 105: ob_start() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler 'ob_gzhandler' conflicts with 'zlib output compression'
and no administrator oprion is visible.

Did somebody meet with something like this? Can somebody advise me how to solve this problem?

Thank you so much

Robert

No, I'm just trying to find out if there is a common connection.

If you can get to the admin panel, turn off gzip compression.

Ran across this the other day as well. It seems to be a setting in php.ini that is causing it, your php.ini file should state this

output_handler =
zlib.output_compression = Off
if it doesn't then there's the problem. You can check what it states by visiting the ACP and clicking on php info link or, alternatively, take this code

Code: Select all

<?php
phpinfo();
?>
Save it as phpinfo.php upload into the root of your website and see what it says by browsing to it.

OK, I wrote to my host support and get this answer:
Hi there,
Could you please check this now.
Regards
I tried and for now it works :D uuuf ... god thanks

I asked them where concrete the problem was - propably somewhere on provider side, something php on server - my amateur opinion - so I let you know about their answer.

Thank all of you to quick responds and ideas - one more time - THANK YOU phpBB Support members!

OK, answer from provider:
Hi there,
It appears a php update caused the zlib compression library to take precedence over the ob_gzip handler, which your site was specifically using.
Regards
question: is it better to turn off gZip compression? or is better to leave it turned on?

Most leave it off. It trades bandwidth for CPU overhead (at both ends) and usually your host cares far less about bandwidth than CPU resources.

I wanted to sign up and reply to this. I had this error as well but adding a line to the .htaccess file near the bottom fixed it.

If your host has the option zlib.output_compression on

Just add php_flag zlib.output_compression off to the bottom of the htaccess file and it should work.
