Upgrading from 2.0 series

Post by Starbuck » Fri Dec 19, 2008 9:27 pm

I have several forums that up until recently have worked well.
However as of late I have had a huge jump in spam registrations as well as HACKS to the site.
I am assuming that upgrading to 3.0.4 will resolve these issues.

What I haven't been able to find is a simple procedure for upgrading the forums.

As it turns out, I am also moving hosting for them so I can also do a clean fresh install of the 3.0.4 app.
However, How do I get all my data imported to the new version?

Any help is appreciated.

Information on how to convert from phpBB2 to phpBB3 is here.

Basically, you must have both phpBB2 and phpBB3 installed on the same server. After you have finished installing phpBB3 you will have the option to convert your phpBB2 board using the built in converter. The information it asks you for is related to the phpBB2 installation and can be found in its config.php file on the server. All of your users, posts, forums, PMs etc are converted. However, styles and MODs are not (with the exception of the birthday and attachment MODs which are supported by the converter). The phpBB2 database is not converted per se, it is merely read and converted/moved to the new phpBB3 database, so if it goes wrong your old board will not be affected at all. At the end of the conversion, once you're happy it's all working, your phpBB2 database and files can be backed up and removed if you so wish. They are not connected to the new installation in any way.

Well that is a problem because I am moving the sites to a new host. So they are not installed anywhere presently. I used the built in DB backup to create a DB backup for importation. So if I can't install 2.0, what are my options?

You can't restore the 2x database to 3x.
You must have both running to do the conversion.

You would need to install 2x on the new site, restore the database and be sure it's working, then install 3x and convert.

well that sucks. I don't even think i have a 2.0 version installer
It would seem to me to have been a lot simpler for everyone if there was a simple DB converter/ importer.

It's usual for 'most people' to already be running 2x rather than just having the database.

You can get phpBB2 here
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... e_id=28882

Unless those people are moving to a new host......

My version isn't found there. it is 2.0.6 circa 2003 It would be so much simpler if there was a simple DB importer in the site. Since it is all phpbb, it would be simple to write a translator.

Looks like I am hosed.

Install 2.0.23
Restore your database
Upload the install folder again
Go to yoursite.com/forumfolder/install/update_to_latest.php
Let it run
Delete the install folder.

Your 2.0.6 has now been updated to 2.0.23.

Ok,

Thanks I will give that a try. However doesn't that mean that I have to have 2 DB running for each forum?
a 2.0 one then a 3.0 one as well?

You can either have a database for each (which is what I'd do) or you can use one database and have different table prefixes.

You don't need the old database after the 2.0 forum has been converted to 3.0 though.

Ok,

When I went to install 2.0.23 it gave me a no input specified. Not sure what that means.
here was the url mydomain/install/install.php

There was no installation notes referencing the need to add a filename to the address beyond what was above.

Any ideas on what it is asking?

Ok,

The install is done, but is it NOT allowing a restore DB so nothing changes.
I follow the restore DB steps, it eventually refreshes the pane with just the footer info.
When I then check the forum index, nothing has changed. It is the same as it was before the restore.

Any thoughts?
