Godaddy messed up my database

Post by takadante »

Godaddy updated their database names from secureserver.net to hostedresource.com

They sent me an email of the change, but didnt understand what it meant. I checked my forum today, and it was reverted to a previous backup. I lost hundreds of users and posts. I am hoping the reason is because it hhas connected to the previous secureserver.net database and hasnt been updated with the new hostname.

My question is, how can I make it so my forum is looking at the new database.

Same thing happened to me! I don't know how to change my Database name in phpBB 3?

This is the email from Godaddy
====================================================
IMPORTANT HOSTING ACCOUNT NOTICE:
NEW DATABASE SERVER NAME
====================================================

Dear xxxxxx xxxxxxx,

This is to inform you that the database server name used to
connect to database maritimegamer has been changed from:

xxxxxxxxxxx.secureserver.net

to

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.hostedresource.com

You will see the new database name in the Hosting Control
Center and database administration tools. This change has
no immediate affect on your site.

To update your site code, modify the database connection
string to reflect the new database server name. This can be
done at any time, as the old database server name is still in
operation. Updating as soon as possible, however, ensures future
connectivity should your database be moved to a new server for
hosting account changes or infrastructure improvements.

Databases set up with DSNs have been updated automatically.
No action is required on your part to update site code that
uses DSNs.

Not really a fail, it's not all that uncommon especially if resources get thing.

In your config.php change

Code: Select all

$dbhost = ''xxxxxxxxxxx.secureserver.net';

to

Code: Select all

$dbhost = "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.hostedresource.com'';
Where the X's are well, whatever it is now...

I made the changes, but I'm not sure what to do now. The forum still has my previous database. I purged cache and cleared my browsers cookies/cache

If Godaddy did the move right, then that's okay because they should have moved the actual data over to the new servers so if you changed config.php then you should see all your old users and posts.

I still haven't seen changes to my forum. Could it be that all my tables are gone? Godaddy support claims that the change would not affect my tables.

I don't think Godaddy has any clue what changing the Database name can do you a phpBB forum.

Well from that message it reads like they are just moving over to new host names the underlying servers are the same machines (currently) therefore if your forum data is out of date it sounds like they have made some serious foul up.

I have been in email contact with Go Daddy's "support staff" and they have told me repeatedly this isn't something they did, nor that they can help me with. The told me that this wasn't something they did.
The told me they cannot even tell me if my server was set up DNS...
and will not give me any support at all, other than to tell me where to find the connection strings.

I have not noticed any changes to my site, but am afraid to update the string now,m worried that something will happen. Well actually last week several people told me they got white pages and a "page not available" message.. I wasn't around that day so did not experience it, but when I called tech support they told em they had no clue... no mention as made of a database change until days later when I received the same email...

If I change hosting providers, is there anybody who will help me to move my files from Go Daddy to another provider? And yes, I did the very bad thing and obtained Phpbb through the "insta install" link on Go Daddy's hosting connection...I was happy with them for awhile but am tired of getting the run around on this as well as the update issue. (They still are on 3.0.2)

grrrrr
I am becoming extremely annoyed at the moment and think I'll just go take a really long walk...

If you edit config.php to reflect the name of the new database server, everything should be fine.

It would also be helpful if any one of the posters shared whatever error message is displayed when attempting to access the board.
